BP 8 Cents off Promotion - Mars Bars / Water

BP is offering 8 cents / L off when you purchase 2x King size mars varieties or 2x 600ml (Brand?) water.

This has been advertised at my local BP stores in south east Victoria.

One night, while purchasing gas and fuel (my car has dual), the operator suggested I purchase the mars bars in order to take advantage of this promotion and to save $$.

I had filled up with approx 50L of Unleaded and 40L of LPG.

The two mars bars cost $6.40 and a discount was applied to the combined fuel and gas of 90L x 8c = $7.20

This does show up separately on the receipt. One discount on the fuel, one discount on the gas.

So not only did I save 80 cents, but I got two king mars bars for the missus and was branded a hero.

Today the operator at one of the BP's only applied the discount to one of the fuels, citing that the promotion was only for 1 discount per transaction.

Is the first operator in the wrong for applying it to both? Is the operator today strictly correct?

I wish I could link it online but I can't find the promotion on BP's site.

I've contacted BP to seek clarification, in the meantime I'd like to know where Ozbargain sits on this. Maybe I'm just greedy, I know fuel margins are tight enough as it is, but I feel a bit jibbed since BP encouraged this promotion in the first place and now are splitting hairs (different staff interpreting the promotion differently perhaps).

edit: Found one of my older receipts, it does seem to support the today-operator's stance of only 1 discount per transaction. I'm surprised the systems are so different between stores. I have done this promo through BP Skye before so I knew they could do it. Maybe it's only the night staff who do it because they don't like the place lol

I know fuel margins are tight enough as it is,

Not where I live, they charge 20cents more per litre than they do in Sydney and the Blue Mountains (The latter is the same distance from Sydney as we are, so the freight BS doesnt cut it.) And BP seems to be the follower in prices when it comes to reductions.

In the past when I had a dual fuel car, Coles/Shell would honour the discount on both, seeing it as one transaction.

On a side note - the Misses probably loves the Mars bars until it blows her weight and then you wont be so popular.

And the night staff probably havent had a manager there to tell them not to do it. The system allows for it otherwise you wouldn't have got it.

But BP can set it's own rules on how the discount is applied. To me "transaction" is the whole transaction, if the operator said it applies to only one fuel type then that is clearer.

    • This has been the first time I've seen somewhere (Coles/BP) not apply it to both. The operator this morning was adamant that since there are two products, there are effectively two discounts being applied, despite it being only one transaction. The terms of the promotion do state it as being 1 discount per transaction.

I don't know much about the BP POS system, although I'm sure if they wanted to it could be applied as one discount to cover both fuels.

I've since contacted BP, who are going to follow it up on my behalf with the local operators. They have indicated it is a local promotion hence why there is no material through BP Corporate which provides more information.

I'm impressed that BP head office took the matter seriously, despite it being only a small amount. I don't fault the local operator since they were probably just following instructions.

        Sorry when I said

The system allows for it otherwise you wouldn't have got it

I meant that you got it in the past therefore, the system allows for it otherwise you wouldn't have got it, in the past.

When I go to COLES and buy a trolley full of stuff, that's one transaction; not 20 different transactions. Why should this be any different? To my mind, if you pay for a bunch of stuff all together, that's one transaction.

    • The argument this morning was that you can only receive 1 discount per transaction. They say that if fuel is discounted and then gas is discounted, it is 2 discounts. I argued it's only 1 discount but their system applies it individually to make 2.

Obviously the point-of-sale system isn't fussed, since night staff regularly apply the discount to both petrol and LPG, but this bird's argument is that they shouldn't be doing that. I reminded her it was her staff that encouraged me to buy the mars bars when the promotion first started in order to save $$ by getting the discount on the whole transaction (both fuels). I think she was the franchise owner, rude as hell =(

BP corp has said they'll look into it, in the meantime I'll just keep filling up late at night =P
