55" Smart TV vs 60" Normal TV

Hi all,

I'm looking to purchase a new TV and have noticed 4 models of similar price currently on sale with free delivery at David Jones.

I already have an Xbox 360 and a Chrome Cast which I use for DLNA streaming, hence I was wondering what other people's opinions were on Smart TVs, and of the ones on offer which would you recommend.

  • My dad and inlaws each have a Smart TV. Dad even went and bought a Sony keyboard… and thats as far as he's gone. The only reason I'd want a Smart TV is if I wanted to use Plex; but considering each TV (inc. mine) has an Apple TV + console (XBONE or PS4) then there's never been any use for the Smart TV features. IMHO… i wouldn't pay for them unless you KNOW you're going to use something on it.

  • I used the Wifi capability to connect to my NAS to play movies, apart from that I dont use the Smart functions. There is probably cheaper ways to do what I want to do, but this method is pretty simple and no regrets. I tried to setup netflix using my samsung smart TV and it was a nightmare, so I bought a PS4 (was planning on it anyway) and that runs very smoothly.

  • yeah, don't really use the smart tv functions, have chromecast which is a lot simpler

  • I like the LG for the Time Machine feature. I have one of the original Time Machine enabled LGs with a dual tuner, so you can record one show whilst you watch another - also can pause and rewind live TV. I'm not sure if any other of the smart TVs can do this.

i have smart 55" 3D since 2 years ago, if i can turn back time i wish i bought 65" non 3d non smart (but have internet port to connect to my NAS via cable)

  • On another note, the Sony is the best out of the bunch for Xbox playability.

    • Who ever negge'd, can you come back and explain your opinion on xbox's and Sony TV's

An explanation is way more informative for other users than a neg vote.

      • Probably just didn't like how I recommended the Sony because of the association of the Playstation brand as a rival to the Xbox.

They are the best for gaming due to the low input latency, from memory the one above is twice as fast as the Panasonic.

Hmm, I got an LG 55" Smart TV for $721 in a deal 3 weeks ago on here.

The Smart functions are not very useful to me since I have a HTPC, but the webOS is really nice imo on the LG's.

    I'd probably go with a 60" normal over a 55" smart - but paying $1k on a 55" smart is overpriced now I think.

After doing more research I think you may be correct, around ~$1050 delivered is pretty standard for a 55" TV at the moment, I might wait and see what I can get post Christmas.
