Steam Cleaning for Pillows, Cushions, Mattresses, Rugs, Car Interior etc?

I want to reliably get rid of (or reduce) dust mites and mould without using chemicals. Is steam cleaning yourself using a Karcher or similar gizmo suitable for pillows, cushions, mattresses, rugs, and a car interior?

Also, there seems to be a wide range of cleaners out there and I've no idea what features I should be looking out for or avoiding - any help there would be appreciated too.

Thanks!

  • Bought one of these a little while back at 1/2 price - http://www.myer.com.au/shop/mystore/ironing-garment-care/eas…

Says it kills all you want it to kill…I haven't used it yet but hopefully it works :)

Edit: Main purpose of buying was for the wife to steam delicate clothing and shirts…no steaming action thus far though.

  • It's the dust mites dropping that are the problem. If you have mould, steam cleaning will introduce more moisture and make it worse. To clean pillows, you can put 2 pillows in a washing machine to balance it out, wash gently and spin and dry very very thoroughly on a hot day in the breeze.

The mattress can be vacuumed regularly eg every time the sheets are changed. The skin that you slough off after drying yourself after a shower feeds dust mites, so best not to shower just before bed, and dry yourself off in the bathroom. In other words, the little buggers are very hard to get rid off.
