Comparing The $999 Sony 4K TV With The $1099 Seiki 4K TV

Can someone kindly explain the difference between the 65" 4k SEIKI tv with the 49" SONY tv which are both on sale now.

The Sony has a much nicer design, but if the specs are not very different, I would prefer the bigger screen. Obvious differences are the size, and Sony supporting 3D

The biggest question is the refresh rate at 4K, the SEIKI being 30Hz and Sony being 50Hz?
Would there only be a difference if they were being used as a monitor, or with normal tv/movies too?

Which would you buy?

  • Ignoring the technical specs, the Sony will walk all over the Seiki in picture and upscale quality. You're trading a lot of core features for just screen size.

Buy which ever is your priority, they are both very contrasting choices.

  • sony all the way!

  • IMHO, yes, there is likely to be a difference in picture quality with TV and movies but much less so where the source is native resolution 1080p or 2160p. For everything else the difference will be in how the TVs handle upscaling. Hard to tell/know how much - even side by side it may not be easy to describe: motion blur, smoothness, etc. but I expect the Sony would be superior and have longevity with features like HDMI 2.0 that do not appear to be available with the over TV. I have a non-4K 65" FHD TV. If your not fussy and size is important then the Seiki sounds like pretty good value.

  • Personally I think the 60" Sony and Panasonic 1080p LCD's that are on special for <$1000 are much better value than the above models. I can't see the value proposition of 4K TV's given their price whilst so little content is available unless there is a specific need for viewing something in the higher resolution.
