Australian Geographic sell metal detectors, but given the other stuff they sell, they may be intended for kid's use, not proper prospecting.
Check the boom length before you buy, the head must reach the ground easily when you are standing upright. A unit intended for kids may be functional, but it will probably be too short. You won't use it for long if you have to crouch to use it.
A guy at work bought one a few days for around $50 from Jaycar eletronics.
