I need a list of Recommendations: allergy specialist, air purifier, coupon website etc etc

Hi everyone !!

I'm an exchange student from the states and I'm very excited to call Sydney home for the next one year . I know these are too many questions for a newbie butI felt like this is a good forum to shoot all my questions .

  1. I suffer from Asthma and am hooked to nebuliser and meds all the time . I need a recommendation for a good allergy specialist in Sydney.

  2. I didn't bring my air purifier but now I'm having a tough time . Can someone tell me where I can find room air purifiers similar to these which I used back in the states http://go-clair.com/

  3. Clubbing scene for students (not too heavy on the pocket) .

  4. Deal/coupon website suggestions as well …

Thank you !!

Enjoy your vacation

    4 . Deal/coupon website suggestions as well …

Pretty sure you're already at the deal/coupon website.

www.retailmenot.com tracks coupon/voucher codes for all different websites.

Don't mean to sound condescending but in Australia we also use Google.

That's a bit mean. New member from the other side of the world, and that's how you welcome them? Thnx for making us sound like tits over here.

Googling can be overwhelming, especially when you've just landed in a foreign place. Why even have forums, anyway? Everything can be Googled.

      • My bad. I'm glad some others were able to help out.

    Welcome to Australia!

I'll try and help with some general info:

    1. To see a specialist (allergy or respiratory) in Sydney you will need a referral from a local general practitioner (GP)/doctor. Your local GP/doctor will normally refer you to someone they use/have a relationship with, unless of course you want a referral to a particular specialist that you know of, in which case your GP will happily write the referral to them. In terms of suggesting a good specialist, try the Woolcock Institute in Glebe - they are world renowned for their work in respiratory and sleep disorders. Also, specialist fees are quite high, so hopefully you have some form of insurance.

    2. Most pharmacies will have air purifiers - try the larger pharmacies like Chemist Warehouse or Chemist Discount chains.

    3. The clubbing scene in Sydney is mostly located on Oxford St in Darlinghurst and King Cross, but there are plenty of other venues around Sydney, so it comes down to what you are into. Drink prices and entry fees into some of the clubs on Oxford St and Kings Cross may get costly if you're on a student budget! However, the Uni bar and it's associated activities are always a good option.

    4. Deal website …you're here! However, Australia isn't as big as on coupons like the way they are in the States… although we are seeing more coupons it just hasn't got the foothold like you see in the states.

Yeah, the vast majority of the coupons are by the supermarkets rather than the manufacturers. So you don't have to wastespend a lot of time cutting out coupons from newspapers or the labels from tins, etc.

    1. Deal coupon website

    - Check studentedge/ myunidays
    - Go to your open day (maybe too late now) but your uni should hand out tons of free things + for the bars etc…

koalalady, did you manage to find what you were looking for?

I can't help with most of your points, but I did spend a bit of time looking around for air purifiers earlier this year. Never did see any as small as the one you linked, though. Perhaps we have a smaller range over here?

The ones I saw in store (and inevitably purchased) were much bigger - mine is one of the more basic/cheaper models in the Sharp range: http://www.sharp.net.au/product-catalogue/category/air-purif… (best to ignore those RRPs.. shopping around, keeping an eye on sales, and asking for the best price in store will often mean you pay less than that!).

Otherwise you might be best off buying online?

What kind of nebuliser do you use? Being hooked up to one sounds like a pain. There are portable/battery operated nebulisers (I have one, but use it for my pets rather than myself lol) but I'm sure you have those over in the States too. Pretty handy gadgets!

edit- if you're after a compact purifier for a small room… would something like this do?

    http://www.harveynorman.com.au/connected-fitness-health/heal…

    Specs etc: http://www.cli-mate.com.au/products/air-purifiers/air-purifi…

Dammit. Kicking myself that I didn't see that when I was after one.

There's also an old discussion over on another Aussie forum which might help you decide: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1920809

    Good luck :)

Thanks for being so forthcoming to help me out . To be honest I didn't expect such a warm and friendly response from an online forum . I had one of my best NYE party and didn't feel homesick . Pretty much everything is resolved. The drugstore nearby has all the meds ,nebulizers etc and I ordered the room air purifier online saved me the hassle of scouting for it . Loved the nightlife here .. Cliff Dive is my favorite place to hangout … I guess not many coupon websites right ?? I guess I'll have to check this forum on a regular basis for the deals and stuff..

  • just random but your Clair air purifier and air filters can be ordered online and free ship to Sydney if you want…

Good luck with new life here.

  • i also browse from whirlpool they have threads there for air purifier, which you can get tips, from my experience the best brands and tested cause ive used and been using it. its the ionmax brands i get from echolife. they do have discounts sometimes , i got mine in a discounted price too. its durable and easy to use. im allergic to dust and smoke even odors and air purifier removes particles as small as in a size of a fine dust, bacteria, pollen, smoke and mould spores

    • It's been a year, she's probably doing ok now…
