Freeviewplus Nonsense on Screen When Changing Channels

I picked up a new Sony Bravia in the Boxing Day sales and it's great :)

The only thing that irks me is the stupid red/green buttons for the network/freeviewplus services popping up every time you change the channel.

Is there any way to turn this feature off or do you need to live with it? I've spent the last 8 years viewing through my Beyonwiz PVR which gives you TV guide et al without any of that freeview rubbish popping up on screen…

  • Probably. If not that sucks.

    Did you read the manual?

    Look in settings and options.

  • Didn't come with a manual :(

Will have a look online now to see….

    You can turn freeview off:
    http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2297050

    On your remote, press HOME
    Select Settings
    Select Digital Set-up
    Select Interactive Application Setup
    Turn Interactive Application OFF

Don't think there is a way for freeview to be on without the popup.

Also it only works when TV is connected to internet.

The default EPG is ok anyway. You can set reminder/timer up from it and I am sure it is 7 day.

You can get the manual online (eg for my model), but it is the same as the TV help and pretty useless for anything beyond basics:

    • Thank you Sir!!!

I'm glad it's gone. Wish I could give you more than only one upvote!

It's also good to know I'm not the only one who doesn't like it :)

You can still keep using the Beyonwiz PVR, just hook it up to the Sony…

    • Still using it but it's only going to be for recording now… Its main function for us is now redundant as it was intravenously hooked up as life support to an 18 year old Philips TV in the bedroom.

The wife loves the new TV but is feeling all sentimental about the old war horse going into retirement… It was our first big purchase after getting married!

  • Just had these Freeview info screen have just started to be displayed on both our Samsung and LG - both are about 2yrs old.

So I presume that Freeview must have just updated their App, or triggered something via the digital info/commands that are broadcast with the Free-To_Air digital transmissions, given that have both brand TV's of our just started doing this "spontaneously" in the same fortnight.

Haven't looked for the Samsung solution yet, but in LG it is called HbbTV (Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV)

So, FWIW - having had Google present this thread to me when I searched for a fix - on our LG TV to deactivate/activate it was:
    - Settings => All Settings => Programmes => HbbTV = Auto Start on/off (and not sure what it does but while there I also deactivated "Provide HbbTV Distinctive ID")

  • How do I disable Freeview Australia pop-up / banner on Samsung TV? As per LG above, also called "HbbTV"

My Samsung is about 2yrs old. I found disable setting here - also called :-

Settings => Broadcasting => Expert Settings => HbbTV =. toggle off
