Help with info regarding 2DS that I just bought?

Hello everyone

So my sister bought me a 2DS today but I read via this: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/158992 that there is going to be a new 3DS released (or has been released).

The 2DS i bought is this

I am just wondering, will my 2DS play games from the new 3DS? I heard that the New 3DS is not backward compatible such that the older 3DS can't play the new games?

I am so confused. Is my 2DS going to be outdated soon (ie. newer games can't play on it?). I am in uni now and last time I had a DS was in Year 8, lol.

    New Nintendo 3DS has been out for awhile now. Your 2DS will be able to play upcoming games, excluding the exclusives which are to be released for the new 3DS (e.g. Xenoblade Chronicles). Good chance that the majority of games will still be released for the original 3DS platform.

    • Um sorry if I sound naive and I do appreciate your reply - has Nintendo said they will stop releasing games for the old 3DS and release games exclusively for the new 3DS only? Does that mean my 2DS will be useless if that were the case?

      • They have stopped productions on older generations of 3DSs… This being said, I don't know whether they will allow compatiability for the games or they will let the older 3DS die out. It would really depend on the decisions of the game developers and/or Nintendo. Both choices do have benefits. But since New 3DS is released fairly recently, I'd assume they would release ones compatiable with older generation ones because of bigger market.

        Though, one thing is certain, New 3DS will get better everything even if it is compatiable, since it has better hardwares.

        I am planning on getting New 3DS solely because of the Monster Hunter 4G running better on New 3DS.

        This being said, if they are planning on making a new console in near future, then the story changes completely again. :P

      • Nah, they said the opposite. The new 3DS will just be for certain games that require a bit more grunt. They still plan to release games for the original 3DS consoles.

        Pokemon for one will certainly be compatible (Game Freak stated they are preparing to announce something soon, yay) just because the sheer volume of 3DS consoles they sold.

        If you wanted to play Xenoblade your a little out of luck, but, if your not too worried about that and want the majority of games that the console currently has your in a fine place. There is no shortage of 3DS games any longer.

        • That is actually good to hear. Since I was actually planning on getting a 3DS, might get the new ones when the Pokemon edition comes out or something :)

    Just to add to what professorturtle said, there are games that would run better on New 3DS, even though it was released for both Old and New 3DS.

    Better loading time, for example, is one of them

    This being said, older games that were developed before New 3DS, wouldn't benefit from the upgraded hardware, at least it seems that way with Pokemon.

    and here is proof that Nintendo's whole naming scheme is terrible

    • Your not wrong.

      That said, Apple did the same thing with one of its products, something in the iPod line if I remember correctly.

      • To add to the example:

        Microsoft:
        Xbox -> Xbox 360 -> Xbox One… WHAT?

        • Apple I think was the iPad, iPad 2, new ipad, ipad with retina.. ? Even though the previous also had retina..

          Agreed on the xbox naming too, at least it wasn't New Xbox 360 though, or Xbox 360 U

          @jumpo:

          Lawl…..

          Oh god Nintendo why :(

          You made a solid console, and then screwed your self on the name.

  • Personally I would try to get the 2DS returned, and buy the newer 3DS
