Huawei Ascend Y550: Stock Android / Lollipop?

So I got the boxing day deal of Huawei Ascend Y550 @DSE and unlocked by Bagman within 30 minutes of making the payment! I gotta say that I'm amused by the performance of the phone! Now the thing is its running some custom Huawei interface, whereas I prefer stock android with all Google goodies.

Is there any way to get rid of the Huawei UI or get Android Lollipop in this phone? Here is a tutorial to do that but not sure it'll work and I don't wanna brick my phone - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=57359697&post…

Hmm, no reliable method yet. Well, its a brand new phone in Australia, hopefully we'll get something soon.

  • Is there any easy method to root this phone? I need to move the apps to SD card ASAP!

  • Update: I have rooted my Y550 successfully following this blog (translation needed) - http://contenidoalt.blogspot.mx/2015/01/root-huawei-ascend-y…

Keep in mind that the serial number is found under the battery, not the one displayed in settings.

After rooting, use Link2SD to move user apps to SD card.

English version that will get you the bootloader unlock code:

      http://mate7.net/ascend-mate7-bootloader-unlock/

Then the following to root it:

      http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=57359697&post…

Had the bootloader unlocked, TRWP installed, and root access within about 10 minutes.

      • Thankyou to you as well!

      • Once you get your unlock code, dont use anything else on the Mate7 site, go to XDA instead as instructed above. The 'package containing required drivers and utilities' in the mate7 website was blocked for being harmful by Chrome when I downloaded it. Virus scan did not pick up anything, but I will delete it anyway.

    • Awesome. Thankyou for your help!

  • I just use either Google Now launcher or nova launcher…gives a pretty stock look.

  • There is an update available via OTA from today (?), sp1.

    • Yep, received the notification during the night. 247SP01.
      "This upgrade offers:
      1. Fix to reduce the power drain under 4G LTE.
      2. Improve the network indicator behaviour to keep it consistent with the Vodafone AU standards."
Network indicator might be how it shows "H" even though the mobile data connection is off.
      Haven't done the update yet.

      • I tried twice but could not install it, says something about file not found and unknown source. However, the wiki on whirlpool says this update will cause breakdown of startup manager.
