Citibank Plus and 28 Degrees

Hi, i have been hearing people say that it is beneficial to have a citi bank plus account or a 28 degrees card. Some people say to get both. I am going to the US next month. I have already applied for the citi bank plus account and not sure if i should apply for the 28 degrees card. What is the benefit of the 28 degress card or having both of these accounts?

Edit 1; i want to put money into an account and not to use it as a credit card
Edit 2; i am told that 28 degrees is good for credit card purchases and citibank is good for atm withdrawals. How does this compare to the 28 degrees, if i would like to buy an item with the citi bank plus card in terms of conversion, fees e.t.c?

28degrees is good for CC purchases and Citibank is good for getting cash from ATMs.

    • So should i apply for the 28 degrees card? So after i make a purchase with the 28 degrees card, can i transfer the amount that i paid for the item from my citibank account to the 28 degrees card?

      • You can repay the CC debt any way you like, with bank transfer, BPay, etc. It's just a normal CC but with no transaction fee on overseas purchases, useful even for people who don't go overseas, for Amazon, Kickstarter, etc. No particular advantage in paying the debt with Citibank.

      • It's good to have because some hotels need a credit card for your room. Plus, I like the protection credit cards offer. I have the citibank for when I want to take some cash out.

        • I agree. I used my citibank plus card as security at a hotel and it messed me up a bit because that amount was 'on hold' in my account for an extended period of time. (Lesson learnt! IE. Do not use a debit card as security at a hotel)

        • yeah, i suppose your money could be locked with a debit card. visa authorisations go stale after 7 days, so you should get your money back then

  • didn't 28 degrees make some change a while back so that it can't be used as a sort of load&go card?

  • The Debit card that comes with Citibank plus transaction account also has NO foreign transaction fee. Plus the currency exchange rates are excellent too. I recently used my Debit card to pay a foreign travel website in a foreign currency. No fee was charged, and I got an excellent exchange rate too.

This is my first post but I thought I'd explain how I use this cards.
I travel overseas a fair bit and I used to pre-load cash on to one of our 28 Degrees card. Since the changes I now only use it as a credit card - no foreign exchange fees. The Citibank Plus is now used for accessing cash via ATMs, also no foreign exchange fees. This works well and lets me make the best use of my cash. The 28 Degree card comes with an optional insurance for purchases - at minimal cost, this is handy. (It also has a price protection policy for the same item within 6 months). I have a card with a supplementary card for my husband with insurance attached. He has a card with a supplementary card for me without insurance. When we travel we use the one with insurance for our shopping (purchases that I'd like to be insured) - the other for food etc that insurance is not necessary for. I have used these cards throughout Europe, USA, UK, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, Bali, Thailand and I've never had a problem. I hope this is helpful.

    • thanks for the reply! this is pretty helpful but just one thing. Do you think having a citibank plus card is enough instead of applying for an additional 28 Degrees card?

  • I have found the Citibank Visa Debit is perfectly suitable for my travelling needs. I don't see the point in taking out a line of credit just to travel with. I can see the benefits if you travel often, but otherwise they both essentially provide the same service (ie. no fees on transactions), and the Citibank one offers no fees on withdrawals. Of course it still comes with all the standard visa protections even though it's debit.

Ever since 28 degrees added the fees to cash withdrawals, I personally don't see much point in using it for transactions that you have to pay off anyway to avoid interest on - it's more or less a glorified debit card. And if you do need the credit - if you don't have the money to travel, maybe you shouldn't be travelling! :)

  • And don't forget Citibank Credit Card Signature - Fee Free For Life too - you might get a free Priority Pass entry too..

  • I use both when I'm overseas:

28 degrees for purchases/hotel deposits/anything else that accepts credit cards, NO ATM withdrawals as they recently started charging fees for it.

Citibank for ATM withdrawals for when you need cash, so in other words, I don't really touch it unless I need cash.
