Driving Unregistered Vehicle from Vic to NSW

My wife's uncle is giving his car as a gift to my wife. We live in NSW and he lives in Vic.

He wants to give us the vehicle with Vic plates removed. He will provide us with a Victorian Temporary Permit and a letter for transfer of ownership.

I plan to fly to Melbourne and drive back to Sydney with the car.

Questions.

  1. Is the temporary permit good enough to bring a the vehicle from Vic to NSW?
  2. Does NSW law allow this?
  3. Can I put insurance on the vehicle?
  4. Any other issues that I need to take into consideration?

Thanks!

    1. Yes, providing you have the right permit.
    2. As for 1.
    3. Yes, however you should advise the insurer of the situation. They will likely put a note on the policy and ask you to advise the new rego number when known. Any regular exclusion relating to driving your vehicle while unregistered would not apply while being driven under the UVP providing the vehicle is being driven in accordance with the terms of the UVP.
    4. Just make sure your uncle is clear with the details (purpose of the trip, your address, the fact it will be going interstate and so forth) when obtaining the UVP and if you plan to make the trip outside of daylight hours, that also needs to be noted on the UVP.
