How to Tape a Movie from The Television to Watch Later

Hello, as I do not have a good understanding on how to tape from my television, I am wondering if someone could be of assistance. I have a Sony Bravia television and would like to tape shows to watch at a later time. What will I need to purchase to enable this. Thank you in advance.

I still have a VHS player! But something like this will do https://www.jbhifi.com.au/tv-home-entertainment/players-reco… which will record onto a USB. What model TV have you got?

  • Do you have a PlayStation? I used to record TV with my ps3 and playtv. You can probably do similar with the ps4/Xbox family/apple but would have to look it up.

Do you have any of these?

    • Thank you for your time. No. I do not have any of these consoles.

      • Are you interested in any of these?

If you are, you could save by getting all in one (gaming/recording/bluray system)!

        • No. I wouldn't use the gaming side of them.

Just realized that my son has an xbox 360. I don't think he uses it any more because he has recently got himself the newer xbox.

If that records, I could us it.

  • For ease of use I would have said Tivo when that was around. Completely idiot proof. But it's sadly gone now. My next suggestion is the Humax 4Tune.

    Hands on here:

But that was a while back and it's had a few firmware upgrades since then. Google it or get an in-store demo. Has all the tuners and features you'll need (or want eventually).

    Tape? Wazzat? :)

I just find it amusing that obsolete technology lives on in verbs. I'm sure there are kids that are asking parents why recording is called taping. Some day they'll be asking why a newspaper is called that when there's no paper.

  • Surprised there isn't a big VCR type culture now that Foxtel locks digital recordings from getting off device. It's a wonder some company hasn't created a super long high density tape to get HD quality of more than 6 or 8 hours.

  • adamren, you kind of answered your own question.

To make a 1:1 digital copy Foxtel would HAVE to allow it, you cannot do it over HDMI due to HDCP to stop you doing this. HDCP stands for High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection, a copy protection scheme to eliminate the possibility of intercepting digital data midstream between the source to the display.

Yes HDMI recording boxes exist but all the ones I know of only work with NON-HDCP content such as produced while gaming on gaming consoles.

You CAN capture by either using component/composite out or using a convertor box, then recording it at the other end onto analogue or digital media by encoding, but this is by no means 1:1 and involves a substantial loss of quality.

I think that's why the super high density tape does not exist. There is no way to get the media on to it 1:1. And even if it did it wouldn't sell because if we COULD somehow get 1:1 off Foxtel, my guess is people would be using random access storage like a hard disk, not sequential like tape.

Another reason I would never subscribe to Foxtel myself - FAR too archaic, restrictive and FAR too expensive for what it is. Although I am acutely aware I will not be able to watch all my V8 Supercars anymore this year now (only some of it), but bugger paying $50 per month to get the base pack (I don't want) and the sports pack (I would need). Even on their streaming Foxtel Play!

$600 to watch my V8s I was getting for free last year. INSANE!

I know it will never happen but I really wish EVERYBODY would cancel their subscriptions tomorrow, forcing Foxtel to re-think it's thievery and come back with better packages we would accept as reasonable.

  • Get a SMART TV and it will have recording function built in.

    • Yes but an atrocious EPG with very bad Series recording capabilities. My experience only extends to Samsung in this case but I doubt any other TVs have a vetted EPG with proper series management. If they do let me know.

You are right it is an option but a device designed to do this such as the Humax or suggested Topfield even will be FAR more suited for the job and I bet a lot cheaper than a new Smart TV also.
