Add support for Live Tile for OzBargain?

I think it would be great if the site supported windows live tiles. Apparently this can be done very simply with a few lines of html?

It would be especially good for those who have picked up discount Lumias lately. :-)

Edit: Here is a reference on how to do it…

    i think not.
back when i had a laptop and surface with windows 8.1 i turned off live tiles as they are useless.

    • I think the usefulness of Live tiles depends on the sort of information they display. If an app or web site doesn't use them well then they aren't much use.

      • I meant useless as I don't bother to look at them. Some might but I certainly didn't they shown useful Ness either actually that's wrong I used it on the email one but every other turned off.

  • Yes, I would agree.
Having love tile support would be great!

    • Please vote as I have added a poll :-)

Edit: Huh didn't realise OzBargain had apps

  • What do people want to see on the live tiles? Maybe examples of good live tile implementations? Also how many people actually want this?

We added WebSlice support back in 2008 for Internet Explorer 8 (at the request from Microsoft directly), but from our stats nobody actually uses it…

  • My experience with live tiles is mainly on Windows Phone but they are also used on Windows 8 (I am running Win 7). Live tiles generally cycle through the current important articles for a site.

To me, Tiles on Windows and Windows phone are much more useful if they are live rather than static.

Some sites which have good implementations of live tiles are:

    • arstechnica
    • Lumia Conversations
    • WMPowerUser

I think the best way to implement live tiles for ozbargain would be to just use the front page RSS feed (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/rss.xml) for the tile.

We have now added Windows Live Tiles support for OzBargain.

    • Internet Explorer must be the default web browser
    • You can then pin from the OzBargain home page
    • 4 sizes to choose from, however only the last 2 (wide & large) provide Live Tile. I think on Windows Phone 310x310 "large" is not supported.
    • Live tile would cycle through 5 of the most recent front-page deals.
    • Where do we get the app?

  • Thanks Scotty that is great. Two changes I would suggest are:

    1) allow the second smallest tile to show live information as well as the two largest. This would fit in more with the other sites that allow live tiles I think - these seem to only use the smallest size for a static tile. There is quite a bit of empty space usually on the wide tile so I think there should be space on the second smallest tile to do it:

    2) change the logo size to be a little smaller as on the second smallest tile I am seeing the text collide with the logo:

Once again, thanks so much for adding this to the site :-)

Alright I see. I am testing these with Win8.1 + IE11. Looks like the wide template does not have image support on WinPhone, as it is showing the image + the title for the wide format. Also makes no sense to show the live tile on smaller sizes on the desktop, but I see that it could be useful on the phone. I'll take a look.
