CCTV Camera Set up

Hi Guys,

Picked one of the https://www.dropbox.com/s/pjhpbuo7rosh7s0/IMG_20150105_14283… up the other day. I want to set up all 4 cameras up.

I'm think of running cat5 cable out to all the cameras and using a balun (http://tinyurl.com/q7wxz7c) at the camera end. Each run will be about 25 meters. Will the baluns work for that distance?

Will the power be ok for that distance? The camera came with a 12v 2a power plug with a 4 way splitter. I will be sending the power over the cat5, will that be ok? There is no power points near by and it is not easy to run new points to the camera

FYI - first link isn't working.

  • Mate…frankly….yuk.

Return it and if you insist on buying the cheap stuff get this one:

Why all these converters etc, when cheap PoE systems already exist???

I'm not saying the Kogan one is great, but it should be fairly comparable to analogue if not a lot better and it already handles the single cabling for you. Why mess with coax/analogue in the first place?

If you don't like the included cameras my company has a setup for a similar price with a couple of domes in it also from memory.

Nothing beats the quality of proper IP67 outdoor cameras with PoE and IR though. Be warned.

    • The whole camera set was $50 and I have a bunch of left over cat5 cabling. so just want something easy to set up

OK, for $50 I get it. Sort of.

Be aware that these baluns are just adapters. There's no electronics to do any conversion, so you're basically grabbing an analogue signal, by very cheap cameras, designed to go over 50 or 75 ohm shielded coax, and throwing it onto a cable wire REALLY designed for digital use through twisted pair cores. Not only that you're now also throwing a 12V power wire over those same tiny cores right next to the data. No more shielding between the power and what used to be coax. Over 25 metres.

Now proper PoE works up to almost 100M but that is completely different technology.

Just getting really worried about the picture you're going to get out of these.

I hope I'm wrong. Please shoot me some captures when you're done. I'm very interested to see what quality a $50 camera set with baluns will actually give us these days.
