Buying Router from USA - Power/Network Issues?

Now i'm sure i'm not the only person who has thought of this, but I actually can't finda forum thread anywhere on Whirlpool or similar…

Is it possible to buy a modem from the USA through Amazon, and use it here?

There is a TP-Link Archer C7 for $85 on Amazon (compared to $120+ over here)…but will it work? I don't see any issues with the power, since it is just a plug in adapter anyway, running on 12V.

But are there going to be any other issues? Configurations/wiring/whatever that are only applicable to teh US?

Thanks in advance y'all

  • Sorry and before i'm flamed here, yes i realise it is a router, not a modem router. Typo on my behalf there

  • Isn't that a wireless router, not a modem? Ha, you ninja edited it. You should edit the title too. IIRC there are some small differences in the wireless channels available, but I don't know the details.

You won't have the full range of channels.. but IMO that shouldnt make a difference unless you're in a built up area.

Run INSSIDER or similar on a laptop and see what channels are being used. Basically you want to choose a channel which is used the least by near devices.

I don't see any issues with the power, since it is just a plug in adapter anyway, running on 12V.

I gather you've got a replacement power adapter with 12v out? The input voltage is the issue, not the shape of the plug

    • So you're saying something like this?

Rather than just reusing the stock standard 12v 1A that came with my previous router?

      • If the plug is the same and the current draw of the router is < 1A you should be ok. AFAIK, the polarity has been standardised for years but double check that centre is positive.

      • Can probably just use your previous routers power, provided it has the same volts.

Trying to suggest the power input of the new router might be 110-240v (in which case you're ok). If it is just 110v then you'll need to find a transformer with 240v input, and a similar output to the router.

    I'm not sure I see the point of this. Router + shipping = 86.72 + 11.42 = USD 98.14 (eg. to Sydney)
At the current exchange rate that's about $120 AUD and then you have CC charges 3% (card dependent) and then you still have to mess around getting a power supply. I'd buy it here at least you get local warranty and don't need to wait around 3 weeks for shipping.

    just my $0.02
