Bread Maker - any good ones around?

I'm in the market to get a Bread Maker. I have little to no idea about average cost for them but looking for something in the range of $200 - $300 (max)

On top of my own head, I am imagining for a bread maker that probably have non-stick surface, set-and-forget kind of thing.

Any suggestions would be great!

  • I can see the appeal of a bread maker, because its not like bread isn't cheap and easily available …

After tasting really fresh bread you might knead to change your opinion and pay the dough.

I can't bring myself to eat supermarket bread after my wife using a breadmaker for years. Supermarket bread is filthy stuff. Even the expensive loaves I've tasted are worse than a plain white loaf made using homebrand flour. Your tastebuds must get used to supermarket bread. Like someone that eats McDonalds often, that shrugs their shoulders at a great home cooked meal - as if to say what's the big deal. Or a smoker that can't discern how disgusting a lot of tap water tastes.

    • How is bread cheap!?! Anything edible costs a (profanity) fortune, my bread maker has saved me so much money over the years

      • If you don't care about quality, it is 85c.
My nice home made loaves cost around 45c, but require 5 mins of prep and a little forward planning. Of course, my 45c lovaes taste as good as a $4 specialty loaf.

        • I guess so. I don't think that white garbage bread is edible tho haha

  • We have had a Panasonic sd 2501 for about 18 months, and can't recomend it highly enough. It makes perfect bread, every time. It seems to be priced around the $199 mark at the moment, but we paid significantly more for it at the time.

Hardly's have it for around the same price, or if you have a Bing Lee store close by it's $10 cheaper.

    • Seen this a few times for about $10 less. I think we paid $187 - by simply asking the Good Guys for a discount.

  • Homemade bread is seriously 10000 times better than ANY loaf I've ever tried. Best sandwiches I've ever eaten

I've had this cheap one for several months, made heaps of bread and pizza doughs and it's always delicious with no problems at all. So you don't need to buy an expensive one for simple delicious bread

  • You dont need no bread maker.

Check out this guy and his recipes.
I have done them heaps of times and they come out perfect!

    • He does made the process so simple to follow and ingredients is indeed simple.

      • Just try any. It's a winner

  • I've had this one for a few years, and really like it http://www.panasonic.com/au/consumer/household/small-applian…

  • I once went to a cooking school. The teacher said the best way to make bread was to use the bread mix in your stand mixer. Dodgy school I know, how can they teach you how to make bread from a cake mix - that's cheating. But it does mean that you don't need to spend a heap on something that takes up a heap of space.

    • I think you meant he said to use a normal mixer. If so, I wouldn't do this with a mixer unless it came with dough hooks (and even then I'd be wary). Why? Because if it doesn't have dough hooks, they know their motor doesn't have enough torque and/or the internal gear mech won't handle bread dough - for long.

      • No, I meant a stand mixer like a Kitchen Aid, Kenwood, etc. They come with dough hooks.

  • We had a cheap one, then got a Panasonic.
Makes consistently good bread and has more than paid for itself.
Makes it easy enough to make every day/2nd day, which is the true advantage over other approaches.

  • Panasonic has been the best for years. I think 2501 is the current model. Try and get one without any damage to the box. Because our first one had to go back after a couple of weeks, due to the fruit & nut dispenser jamming. If you buy another brand, make sure it's got a mains-cutout recovery… otherwise when the power browns out for a second, the machine resets - and you have to throw out the dough and start again.

  • Panasonic is the king of bread makers

  • Looks like we have a consistent message that Panasonic seems to be the frontrunner for bread maker
