SATA Hard Drive Docking Station

ok, been looking to buy an external hard drive but I'm now looking instead to buy a SATA Hard Drive Docking Station such as this ORICO 6619US3 5Gbps USB 3.0 to SATA Hard Drive Docking Station for 2.5 / 3.5 inch SATA HDD

from Gearbest. Anyone have any advice/tips on how to make use of this?

  • well I guess it just means instead of buying external, you just dock an internal drive (or 2) in there and they act as externals. I dont really see any other benefit and thats not much benefit with externals being prices so closely to internals these days and they are more protected in those boxes I feel

  • it's more of storage. easier to store plain internal hdds, and then when you need something from them, a docking station makes it easier to copy out what you need

  • I'm assuming you're not going to be considering the 2.5inch drives but the bigger 3.5 inch.

Unless you're considering having multiple storage drives and not require ease of portability, the docking station is decent. Remember that whilst current electronics are significantly not as sensitive to static as it used to be, there is still a higher risk that you may kill the logic board on the drive vs an ext drive.

My personal opinion is to go for the ext drive over the docking station for 1 simple reason, if you're asking for advice/tips, you may not know what you're doing. The ext drive is also slightly more portable than the docking station.
