Need to replace Gets as it was rear ended while parked. Advice on Kia appreciated.

Tow truck driver says it is write off.Was to be my first and last new car.2010 auto with only 30,000 kms. Now retired so mainly suburban use.
Looked at RACV Best Cars list from October 2014. Liked specs on both Honda Jazz and Kia Rio.
Just looked at small cars list and Kia auto hatchback Cerato is about same price as Jazz until end of month on special $19900 drive away. Extra for metallic paint.
Loved the Getz for parking and driving but was bumpy when crossing railway tracks.
I know zilch about cars but my reading of both light and small best car reviews and other sources seem to suggest bigger may be better. It may also be easier to access as I get older.
Honda is better established here but not up to tech speed if you have android and reportedly clunky even with apple. Leather seats and flash trims are not as important as performance.p
Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who is car savvy or owns a
Kia or Honda if they have time to share their expertise.
I have to wait for assessors report. The other driver has accepted liability.
Thanks in advance.

  • I bought my Kia Cerato 2012 manual 18 months ago for a song. 17,100 drive away, and it replaced my Suzuki swift.

I've done 52000 kms in heavy stop start conditions. I think that the Rio was overpriced in comparison to the Cerato, this car has been great! It's a little thirstier than I expected but plenty of go in the 2L. Seats are very comfortable, handling on stock Nexen tyres was sloppy but now great with Michellins. Great audio system, reliable and very cheap to service, my services are around $230 each. Bought with the intention of keeping for 5 years but will hand this car down to a family member. Honda Jazz would be a great choice too, too small for me though. The new Mazda 2 may be worth looking at too, considering your ks are lower.

  • Don't own either of those cars but you will find with all small cars with small wheels and a short chassis that all road bumps (inc railway lines) will be felt more than in a regular car.
Make sure you check out all that is available to you… www.carsales.com.au

Be sure to check servicing costs for the car you choose, some charge ridiculous amounts for what is nothing more than an oil & filter change. Some do charge $500+ for that pleasure.

  • Honda is better established here but not up to tech speed

What do you mean tech speed? I drove a brand new 2014 Suzuki swift a couple of months ago, and my goodness the tech, especially the screen was so outdated.

  • I was talking about the effectiveness of navigation apps when pairing with mobiles, only ios, reviews suggested implementation was not as smooth as ought to be.
Yes, hubby has always reminded me about longer wheelbase whenever he had to ride in Getz as opposed to his Peugeot 306 station wagon.

  • +1

7 year warranty on Kia cars vs 3 years for most car brands.

  • +2

There is alot of stigma associated with some car brands like Kia & Hyundai to name a couple, 10-15 years ago they really had a bad name due to some poor releases and build quality wasnt up to scratch. In the last 5 years, Hyundai in particular, they have really stepped up to the plate on both Quality, Technology & Value. To try and shake concerns associated with the brand they are offering significantly longer warranty periods to build consumer confidence. I personally havent shaken the stigma and I couldnt bring myself to own one just yet. I know a few people with Kia's and they love them, however these people are not really car enthuiasts and I question what sort of baseline they have to compare to.

  • I didn't want to spend much on buying a new car, so I bought a 5 door Kia Rio Auto Hatchback with 5 year warranty. Love it.
Always glad that I didn't spend more :) IN the past, I've driven Toyota, Honda, Audi, BMW… this is the best value.

  • I bought a MY15 Cerato 2 months back in the Pearl White
I have tinted the windows to 25% — looks pretty cool
I just love this car, drives great very nicely appointed inside , the air-con is superb, nearly blows you out of car on setting 4
I am 6' 3" & can have my legs out dead straight , I actually wanted a Hyundai Elantra after using a hire car in Qld but they were dearer & 2nd hand was like 17K for 30,000 km's.
I find the Cerato is just like the Elantra,[yep, same factory] right down to the seats & sliding bin/tray in front of the gear stick , the tyres [Nexan ]would probably be the weakest part on the car & the outside temp sensor seems a bit off
but overall fit is superb ,doors close with that nice feel Love it
    7 yr warranty
    7 yr road assist
    capped servicing

only change I would have designed is ,get rid of the inbuilt rear window aerial for a short stubby [ala Koup]

  • Bought the Kia Cerato S auto for $19600 with floor mats and fuel.

In my research I also looked at australiasbestcars.com.au and compared their reco's for cars under $35,000 and rang RACV car advice line. Looked at lots of car reviews as well and a video on ten tips to negotiating when buying a car. I didn't even bother game playing, just said, this is best price on Hyundai and I want you to match it but only if I like driving your car as much as the Hyundai. When I looked at Kia I found features I thought were better designed. ( I assumed everyone was correct in saying that mechanically they were identical)

I bought the Kia Centaro S because,
    -better visibility of speedo panel
-larger and more accessible boot space when put back seats down.
    -front and back parking sensors
-diagram on instrument panel shows which of parking sensors is beeping
-indicator lights on external rear vision mirror as well as normal back light
-reflectors on internal door panel when you open it at night
    -seven year warranty
-set of car mats and full tank of petrol included.
-servicing, Kia has shuttle bus to return home or Chadstone shopping centre
Price: $19,600 for Kia Cerato S MY15 model in standard white paint
    - reckon Hyundai i30 Active probably would have gone couple of hundred lower but much preferred internal design as above in Kia.
-both cars comfortable and easy to drive. Kia has bigger rear window.
Can collect Monday afternoon which means don't need to hire car till Wednesday.
Am happy I made a decision and will soon have wheels.

thought it may help someone if they could read which factors influenced my decision.
