Anyone bought a vehicle of GraysOnline.com?

As the title states, has anyone ever bought a vehicle from graysonline.com?

If so, I'd love to know what your experience was like. What the process is. How much it ended up costing including fees etc

I'm tempted, but it looks a bit daunting.

I purchased a Volvo via auction on graysonline two years ago. The process was straight forward. The fee was 5.5% of the winning price ( I forgot to use qwibble.com.au which would give you back 2.4%). Please note the fee is different for each auction, you should check carefully. After winning, there will be an invoice email which tells you to make a payment via bank transfer, bank cheque ( for more than $5000). You can call them up and check. Most of the vehicles on graysonline are sold unregistered so you need to take the car for inspection and pay for new plate etc …

    • Cool, thanks for the reply! Did you view the vehicle in person before purchasing?

      • I did take a risk, didn't inspect the vehicle before bidding (too busy + they have fixed times for inspections). I was lucky that the car I won was much lower than its market value (after including all the costs e.g buyer fees, registration etc …). The inspection report described exactly what the car was.

The insurance company (Allianz I think) provided the market value at $27K, the price I paid all together was $19K. I was really happy.

        All the best mate :)

Just fyi an auction doesn't come with MANY consumer rights. So it's a risk you need to weigh up

  • Id be very wary of what you buy, most of the cars on Gray are in much poorer condition than described in their advertisements. You cant test drive the vehicles unless your a registered mechanic (with insurance). The engine might "seem" fine but their might be problems with the driveline. Which is only noticeable when you hit the road.

With that in mind bid a price which will consider in repair cost/s. I've seen auctions go close to market value, tbh i'd rather pay that little bit extra and have peace of mind. Than have to fork out 2-3k on a tranny rebuild

    • Thanks for the insight. I'll definitely take it into consideration if I proceed to use greysonline.

  • My experience was really bad. Bought a Mercedes ML500 W164. On the description all it said is minor dents and scratches and car runs fine no service history. I do live in a different state from where the car is so i got it delivered interstate using CEVA. I take the car from them and as soon you put in drive and try to move it starts slipping in and out of gears and it goes to limp mode only using 2nd gear if it manages to hold into it. Keep in mind even if I managed to go there and inspect the car there are no test drives meaning I would have had no way to find out that transmission is stuffed. Luckily I have a mate that is a transmission mechanic and given that I did the labor to pull it off and put the transmission back on the car it only costed me $2000 and 3 months to fix it. Really bloody disappointed.
