i got an 8 gig one from Aldi a while back.

its the slowest USB stick you'll ever use

    • +1

      Exact same, USB 3.0?

      • no. not exact same.

but one day, i did a 'hdparm -tT' on all my USB drives connected to USB 3 port (that's like a basic read test on linux)

on conclusion of those tests the Aldi one was re-located to the rubbish bin it was just so bad even comparing to the most ancient USB sticks i have.

youre right, that doesnt mean all their USB sticks will be like that forever,
but it was enough for me. even like a 4-5 year old Kingston 8GB traveller outperformed it!

I went to a mate's house and the data on his medion stick got corrupted in front of my own eyes. I had the same thing happen on a ADATA usb stick of mine. So i always stick to well known brands now.

        • Thanks for the heads up, gonna avoid this

        • +1

@techno2000: Same thing happened to me on a Sandisk, when it comes to these things they can (profanity) up easily no matter what brand it is

        • +1

@techno2000: I thought ADATA was a good brand. LinusTechTips you liar! In all seriousness, I tend to stick to Sandisk for flash storage products.

        • @techno2000: I bought one a few years ago now. Took it home, plugged it into my laptop, copied a file over, unplugged it, remembered I wanted to copy something else, plugged it back in, and it was unreadable.

  • Yeah, really curious to see the read/write speeds.

      • Don't understand it but There are a lot of speeds talked about in that forum so hard to know which one is correct

      • When you look at http://usb3speed.nirsoft.net/?g=64gb
there are two entries for a Medion 64gig USB3.0 Stick.

        One at Read: 25.04 MB/Sec Write: 11.54 MB/Sec <<<<Terrible!

        the other at 122.62 MB/Sec Write 64.01 MB/Sec <<<<Great!

I'm hoping this USB Stick is the latter.

I think I will buy one, bring my laptop to test, see if its the fast one then I'll post my results.

You've got 60 days to return it if you don't like it. So there is no risk of giving it a go.

      Hi Guys,

The USB checks out with some surprisingly good speeds.
Link to the speedtest I did

      On an ASUS T100
      143.8 MB/S READ
      79.75 MB/S WRITE

      Solidly built too!
Only caveat is it gets hot as balls!! 40-50C after testing

      • Those speeds are okay, strange about the heat though. I may pick one or two up tomorrow, will do a h2wtest or whatever it is, see if I get the same heat issues.

      • Confirming the performance using H2testw v1.4 on an ASUS Taichi 21
        Writing speed: 79.5 MByte/s
        Reading speed: 119 MByte/s

And, the temperature peaked around 50C according to a QM-7225 infrared thermometer. Indeed very hot to the touch and a maybe a worry for longevity/reliability. I hope the heat is by design being effectively dissipated by the case which appears to be made of aluminium.

The packaging lists it as a P81162 and the sticker on the device underside labels it as an MD 87266. Made in Taiwan - I didn't think there was anything left not made in China :-)

    .
On the Aldi German site it lists the write & read speeds as 40 & 100 (I think that's max speed not your average)

    https://www.hofer.at/de/angebote/technik-angebote/detailseit…

robust aluminum housing, Write Speed: up to 40MB /s, reading speed: up to 100 MB /s, USB 3.0

  • I have a few usb sticks, and the medion is the only that failed.

  • damn just bought one a couple of days ago on Catch as my HDD just died and I'm sick of losing my data on external USBs, now going to play it safe with flash - wasn't cheapest price but I combined a few things to make the best of the delivery….might have to get one of these as a spare!

  • Can anyone confirm the 100/40 claim?
Those are quite decent speeds for the price..

  • Doesn't mean that this is the same, but every flash drive I have ever bought from Aldi has died. Must admit, haven't bought one for 4 years now. Thrice bitten as they say.

  • I don't understand the willingness to buy electronics from Aldi.

Why anyone would choose this stick, over one of the cheap PNY ones from Amazon, is beyond me.

    • +1

because its hard to return shit to amazon

its easy to return shit to aldis

      the end

and LOL PNY, what a shit brand

  • +1

i bought a 'FUSION' brand 4gb USB from Aldi and it works just as fine the first day I bought it as it does now. Why all this negative about ALDI brands? as someone said before, a Sandisk brand could just as easily be corrupted. I guess it depends how powerful your computer system is …

  • 60 days money back is a peace of mind to have a go…

    • exactly - buy it, run a speed test, and either keep it or return it.

like, when aren't Ozbargainers going to Aldi every week?!?! -sorry S.A. + W.A. ;(

      • we get 1 soon:)

  • Interesting that people are having these poor experiences with Aldi memory hardware.
I bought two external 1tb harddrives from them 4 years ago and decided to open them up from the casing.
I found a good quality Seagate 7200RPM in both and installed them directly into my PC. Have not had a problem with them at all.
