Sony Xperia Z3 Not Recognised on PC Via USB Cable

Hi guys. Z3 having issues recognising in windows 7 computer asus.

Best i get is my usb 3 port recognising drivers to auto install but fails. The usb 2 ports dont prompt driver installation at all.

Followed sony advice online and changed under connectivity from mtp mode to msc prior to connecting via usb. This time i got a prompt in phone to install software and a Sony installer showed in explorer. it then installed and updated sony companion fine. At the same time the windows prompt box showed that phone and usb drivers had a tick next to it but the mtp was a red cross indicating nothing found.

Sony companion finished up and now z3 had power symbol up on phone where prev it didny when connect to usb. Reconnected z3 usb cable as no device was recognising in companion. Unable to launch the file manager software in it. Now have on and off luck when connecting by usb to show in sony companion. When i do show i get the sony installer show in explorer but otherwise no recognition of my phone.

All i want is windows explorer to show the phone to copy and paste in files. Any ideas why it isnt showing?

Is it linked to the failure to find any mtp or other drivers to install off the phone? Any other z3 users experience similar difficulties??

    First try
    (a) another cable.
    (b) another computer.
    (c) Sony Software and Drivers http://support.sonymobile.com/global-en/tools/pc-companion/ and http://developer.sonymobile.com/downloads/drivers/xperia-z3-…

    Report back.

    • a) Tried another usb cable (does the quality/cable matter? I have my sony one and also a cheaper one that came from a china battery recharge pack. I used a HTC one that i had from three or so years ago)

No luck…. I used only my usb 3 port… Set at Mass storage mode (MSC) it recognises with the whole usb sound coming on my speakers, power charging click sonto phone etc…. nothing happened at first but the second time i retried i got th eprompt on the phone - software ready to install. Eventually a G:/ CD drive for Sony software pops up… again its just the installer for the sony companion.

Setting it to media transfer mode (MTP) - no instant power on or usb sound on computer when i tried it. OR software prompt.

FUNNILY enough i just tried it again after writing the above ( sometime after these tests) and the power charging is working and software prompt on MTP mode… seems hit and miss. The install latest software prompt is showing on my mobile, but the G:// Cd drive for the sony installer is not showing in windows explorer unlike when i switch to MSC mode prior to plugging in by usb.

      b) on site (FIFO) - so no other computer to try yet….

      c) Should I wait for b before trying c? I assume not.. will give c) a go and try again… but like i said i already had sony companion install per the phone, update, and sometimes have luck wiht the device showing, but when it does it doesn't offer any file transfer options or ability to drop and drag in windows explorer.

Will try the second link on drivers shortly… getting late so might have to do it after work tomorrow.

      • Now i Tried MTP again… it doesnt prompt the sony installer on phone again… no sony installer cd drive detected in windows explorer BUT the sony companion prompt pops up prompting that the sony xperia d6553 is detected and to launch companion? I hit yes, it opens, but no phone in the top left of the software shows as connected/detected.

Tried the 'how to connect' button to get it to detect, nothing. Not sur ewhy it picks it up upon usb connection but then fails to see anything when the software is launched further.

EDIT: Downloaded drivers in c) and i end up with a z3 zip file with various files under either amd64 or xperia z3 sub folders. I have no idea what to do with them or how to run them? Don't see any .exe file or anything that will run them? Sorry - some guidance please for the uninitiated?

        Many thanks.

        • Can you try a USB2 only port until you diagnose the problem?

Most motherboards still require correct and up-to-date USB3 drivers to even function. You can find them on your motherboard manufacturers website.

Regarding the drivers, you will need to install them via the Windows Device Manager, this guide I found on Google might help -e xcept you have already found the drivers so start from "Install the Driver Step".

        • @Gunther:

Sure. I'll try one i get back from the work today. Please see my response to project zero below. Using a diff usb cable (my old samsung s3) to my work desktop and my z3 on mtp mode and the device drivers came up on windows automatically installed and my phone internal files became visible in windows explorer. So clearly an issue with my personal laptop.

Ok ill try the usb 2 ports tonight and if it doesn't prompt installation I'll try the link provided to try and install via device manager.

I didn't know that about usb 3. I did notice that usb sticks or sometimes other usb devices failed to detect on the usb 3 port but not the usb 2?

        • @SaberX: Yeah it happens, some motherboards have no problems. Others do.

You can easily use CPU-Z http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html to find the make and model of your board to get the drivers.

        • @Gunther:

Ok sorry about the delay. I finally am backhome from site and have tried to do the drivers via the howtogeek link above. The thing is I select th efolders unzipped from the xperia z3 drivers given by you above and it can't find anything in the folders.

I selected the 'find automatically' online and it managed to find and instally the usb MTP driver, appears to be sony related or something. But either way as soon as it activated my phone made the battery charging noise and is now showing in windows explorer! Yay!!

Makes me curious about two things.

          1) How USB power works, given my phone doesn't start charging until the USB driver is installed, doe sthat mean devices have a power shut off function where without the drivers , even if physically connected power can't flow through? Except pre-drivers installed it was charging if i switched to MSC mode from MTP.

          2) How on earth do I install the z3 drivers manually? Given automatically finding it worked, I'd be in troubel without internet in a new computer or in 5 years time if drivers are harder to come by for ancient hardware.

Given I have the z3 drivers downloaded, just how and what file extension names are considered 'drivers'? There is an "amd64" or "Xperia Z3" folder. I assume it was the xperia Z3 folder and selected the driver installation to install from there and its subfolders (subfolders include the amd64 and i386 folders". But this is where i ran into the wall stating no drivers could be found from searching there…

be curious how to get that working. ALthough technically my problem is solved now - I can see the phone and its contents in windows explorer!

          THank you very much!

        • @Gunther:

With regards to cpu z- had that installed before> Once i Find my mobo though, are drivers built specific to a mobo in terms of its usb 3 usage? Or do you need to find the relevant driver on a per device basis rather than your motherboard specifically?

Hope that isn't confusing. What i meant is regardless of whether i want an external hdd, a phone , or some other usb device to work properly through usb 3, is it contingent on the drivers you install made available purposely fro thsoe devices? Or just a generic up to date driver that your laptop's mobo is responsible for keeping up to date/releasing?

Once i know my mobo name do i just search for "xxxx mobo name usb 3 drivers"?

  • Try this as well if Gunther's idea doesn't work.

    • Hi - this is done as part of my initial OP and above - i switch between the MTP and MSC modes with varying degrees of random success. At most i seem to get the installer prompt for sony software to be push installed onto my laptop from my phone screen. Otherwise i get a G:// cd drive pop up relating to the sony installer/auto run software etc.

Otherwise no luck in any form of where i can drag and drop into a windows explorer directory. No sign of any internal storage files, photos etc.

No micro SD card is in the phone either.

  • When I installed my phone i didnt have the Sony manager installed yet. I'll give it a go on my work one and see if I have any issues

    • Crap… was on my phone so i thought it was replying to the previous post…

Anyway, tested it at work with MTP, no issues on my end. Perhaps try updating your windows? Maybe try a different usb port as well? Chances are, you installed a usb driver into the usb port you were using that isn't working corrently.

      • I just got to work. Tried a diff usb cable ( my old phone) with the z3 on mtp mode.

It installed device drivers instantly and the phone showed up in windows explorer with relevant internal storage files etc. I'll bring the cable back with me tonight to try on my laptop but otherwise seems laptop isolated.

After trying the usb 3 though, when i plug into usb 2 i dont get a windows prompt of device drivers installing, let alone successfully??

        • Once drivers are installed once and correctly, it shouldnt need to re-install each time. It will just work!
