Apparently a MS employee posted on Reddit and noted that it was an internal coding issue. Developers request the OS version for various reasons in code but the issues is that the "9" is already partially used by Windows 95 and 98 (Windows 9x). This could cause issues with older legacy programs.

        [Edit] www.reddit.com/r/geek/comments/2i0g19/microsoft_dev_explaini…

        • +2

Nah that comment is complete bullshit.
Internally it just doesn't work that way.

Here's what it actually looks like in the registry:
          http://imgur.com/TFNpAmr

It is based on "CurrentVersion", which in this example is 6.1.

6.1 correlates to Windows 7, here's the table:

          https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ms724832(v=vs.85).aspx

You can see that the actual version number and the ProductName don't have to correlate for compatibility reasons (i.e. Windows "7" is "6.1")

If they were truly concerned about compatibility in case some developers sloppily used ProductName instead, they could have simply left ProductName as-is and made a "ProductName2=Windows 9", and make the system information screens point to ProductName2 instead while old applications keep looking at the original ProductName key.

        • +7

Windows does have a proper version API, but Windows also attracts a lot of retarded developers.

          The usual example

This will be a great deal WHEN IT'S AVAILABLE.

When Windows 10 is available, my 4-5 year old PC will probably not meet minimum specifications to upgrade to Windows 10.
Windows 10 will work so poorly on my old PC I will have to buy a new PC and new Windows 10 tax licence.
Windows 10 will probably require touchscreen - therefore no free upgrade for me either.

    • +3

      my 4-5 year old PC

A PC that is 5 years old would be runing a Core 2 Duo, or some equivalent AMD Athlon x2. It's 2015 now, so a 5 year old PC would be one made in 2010, and that would be a very late gen Core 2 Duo, or a Nehalem era processor.

I have a computer that is older than yours, a E6300 Core 2 Duo that is 6 years old, it's completely capable of running Ubuntu with unity and Windows 10 tech preview.

      • -1

But by the time Windows 10 is released, his PC could be 5 years old by that time. The specs for Windows 10 is not finalised so nobody knows for sure. But I agree with you, the way things are heading since Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and evident in the 10 tech preview, Windows is becoming more resource efficient on the same hardware as they are targeting low-end PCs.

    • +1

I'm guessing it'll work just fine, assuming Windows 7 also works well on the same system. The requirements for the OS haven't changed dramatically over the years, and in many cases some of the requirements have dropped as MS has been moving to make the OS manageable on lower specced systems such as tablets and the like.

    • +1

I installed Windows 8.1 on my fathers Inspiron 6500 (Cirtca 2006) - runs faster than Windows XP ever did. Screen res was fine.

    • +1

I'm running Windows 8.1 on a Dell Latitude D830 with 6GB RAM, Core 2 Duo 2.4ghz and it runs really well. Better than XP or 7 did. I'll be upgrading it to 10. I only use it for web browsing so no point in replacing it until it dies!

    • Ha! My current laptop is running a centrino 2 from 2008 man. I put a USB3 Cardbus card in there and replaced one of the hard drives with a 128 gb SSD.

The laptop is fantastic, it's running windows 8.1 and is incredibly responsive. The cardbus USB3 card gets 100 MB/s to my external drives and I see no reason to get rid of the laptop. I keep it clean (I've had to open it up and get real deep in there by removing absolutely everything to clean the heatsync) and I replaced the power supply and battery for about 30 bucks on ebay. The remaining harddrive bay has an old 7200 rpm 500 gig hard drive.

I use it to run all sorts of scientific programs, I dualboot with linux mint and I use it to stream steamplay through the HDMI in my living room. I'll be taking advantage of this and upgrading to windows 10 for sure.

Try a little harder to keep your tech alive :)

I'm part of the Windows Insider Program testing Windows 10 at the moment and can confirm that the enterprise version will be different from the consumer one. Most likely there will be only 1 desktop version, probably a basic OS and the features will be added through "add feature" function. It looks like Windows 10 will be heavy cloud based. I wonder how much will that cost. Because of the cross platform integration like Xbox One, I would imagine some of those features might be free if you own the console. BTW, there is already a new game in development that will run on Win 10 and Xbox One simultaneously and it's called Fable Legends. At the moment look and feel is similar to Win 8 with the standard desktop and start menu.

    • Thanks for info. What's the plus for Win 10 as compared to Win 8 from you point of view?

      • Well, for desktop users it'a a plus, because it has similar menu system as Win 7 with some additional features like multiple desktops. At the moment I haven't noticed major differences except more interaction using cloud apps. There is a Siri type feature for voice commands, but it will probably require OneDrive integration with apps like MS Office. New features are still being added and I would be very interested in a new feature for Xbox one integration (no mention of Xbox 360 though). At the moment it is still wait and see.

        • That doesn't seem to make much sense? If you already have a PC - the vastly superior gaming platform, why would want to game on a console or need any integration of it with your PC?

        • @infinite: Yes, that is correct if you make an assumption that everybody has got a gaming desktop. I think that integration with Xbox One will probably target Tablet PC's like Surface Pro and laptops. Something similar Sony has done for PS4 and PS Vita. You can have a game that uses both.

      • Am also running the preview version here on a laptop. Installs and runs fine on a lappy that's about 5 years old. Much better than Windows 8 in that you get the expected start button and menus back. You can configure the Start menu with the options that you are used to and it also has fly-out section where you can pin 'live tiles' if you want. For me that's no biggy, I might use the weather one or the skype one but I prefer the weather gadget on my Windows 7 desktop to be honest.

The downsides are the cloud integration and like windows 8 the NECESSITY to log in to a Microsoft account before being able to use the app store and other useful features. Cortana seems cute though it's early days and again, the privacy aspects of the technology are a concern.

AFAIK you can turn off the MS cloud option if you (rightly) don;t trust the privacy and security of the cloud. Cloud is handy but NEVER post secure or embarrassing items on it. :)

  • Hopefully you will be able to download it as a standalone package rather than an "upgrade" over the top - the worse kind of upgrades :S

  • Pretty good that they include Windows 7 Users. But why not 8.0 users? My colleague has a laptop with 8.0, which is unable to upgrade to 8.1, because Windows Update crashes when trying (after 2 hours of downloads and 3 hours of installing, it will spend 4 hours reverting the installed updates….).

    • +1

I'm guessing because 8.1 is a free upgrade anyway. If the system is crashing when he tries to go to 8.1 it might be that he'd have the same issue going to 10.

Wouldn't shock me if they do allow a direct 8.0 to 10 upgrade however.

  • Well I guess it has to be better than the confusing, steaming mess that windows 8.1 is. Honestly, it has to be the most illogical OS ever made.

    • +2

Well firstly 10 is much better - been running the preview for months but secondly the "steaming mess" is a bit OTT. If:

You stay in desktop mode and have your usual icons on the desktop and taskbar and use them and
Learn to right click on the Windows button for settings etc.

Then really all you have is Windows 7 minus start menu but MUCH faster, less resource hungry, with a LOT more logical touches such as when copying files etc.

From a technical standpoint 8, with it's lighter kernel is in fact MUCH better then Windows 7. Yes, there are a lot of haters because Microsoft took away the start menu, and replaced it with an interface that's really better suited to touchscreens, but if you simply turn that off and set the PC to start in Desktop mode, all the hating is really a storm in a teacup.

      • Yeah true, but when you compare it to something like OS X, it really is a big pile of poo. Too many ideas, all over the place.

        • +2

          Ah - a Mac fan.

Nothing wrong with that so am I.

          BUT

I DO keep an open mind. And I think a "big pile of poo" and "too many ideas" when all they did is actually improve it drastically under the hood (ALL good changes), and replace the start menu with a modern interface (not well received) does not classify it as any shade of feces.

          Having said that…….

The start menu is back with Windows 10. Melding the old style menu with the new style tile menu actually works really really well (not sure whether you've played with the preview).

So if you dislike 8.1 I think you'll like 10.

        • @Ramrunner: good. I'm not a Mac fan, I've got two windows. 8.1 pcs and one Mac.

  • Currently it is just an announcement by Microsoft. No fixed date for the release has been announced. Since the product (Windows 10) is not available yet, it is no deal for me.
The information should be in forums.

  • I'm happy with the announcement but really should be in the forums.

  • +2

Take a thought for Windows 9. Think it feels a bit ripped off

  • -2

Well I bought a new Asus N550JV with 16gb ram with windows 8 . when I turned it on it immediately started to upgrade to 8.1. What a disaster. ran so slow I had to take it back to Asus who advised me I would void my warranty if I upgraded to 8.1. they had to do a reinstall of windows 8. I don't think I would be game to upgrade to windows 10. Microsoft support was non existant.

    • +3

I've never heard of a software updating voiding a warranty. Especially what is basically a service pack. You should contact Asus again.

If you want to attempt to fix the problem I'd try:
-Do a bios update for the laptop
      -Install Windows 8.1
-Install newest versions of drivers directly from component manufacturer or from Asus
-Bit of basic troubleshooting round startup software/services

Windows 8.0 won't receive upgrades past January 2016, so it's not a long term solution especially for a d

I don't think Microsoft provide support to OEM's, so this would be Asus's responsibility.

      • +1

I agree a software upgrade CANNOT exclude ASUS hardware warranty so this is a load of bollocks. Are you sure you took it to Asus and not some snot nosed kid at HN, JB, GG, DS or the like coz this is exactly what I WOULD expect to hear from them.

There was something else amiss with the notebook I'm sure. I've yet to see a 8-8.1 upgrade cause slowness and I do this stuff for a living.

        • I took it to the Asus repair centre at kessels rd in brisbane. I can assure you that that was what happened. There are 300 posts about problems upgrading to 8.1.

          http://www.networkworld.com/article/2226753/microsoft-subnet…

The laptop works well on windows 8 but despite your doubts that is what the Asus repair centre advised me

  • This sounds like a trick, they're probably planning on switching to the Google business model of spying on people and targeting advertising towards them, hence the new browser.

    • +1

The business of spying on people started with Google, and was made popular and lucrative by Facebook.

Speaking of which, if you are afraid of M$ spying on you, you shouldn't be because it's more likely Google and Facebook got to know you first and they know you the best. Microsoft on the other hand came much later with behavioural tracking.

    • I think your are absolutely right - spot on, but not quite "spying".

I really do not believe a pimply teen at the other side of the world is reading my e-mail, which is what I term as spying.

What I DO believe is that Microsoft (like everyone else including Apple in my opinion) will keep track of on-line purchases and types of sites visited to target their advertising and sell those statistics (or use them themselves).

Consumer metadata is big, big business. Much bigger than the profit made on a single copy of Windows 10. So I think you are right.

But this is NOTHING new. If you think your metadata is not being used right now by some computers crunching algorithms you are kidding yourself.

Basically if you want to be completely anonymous the best thing to do is stay off the internet. You can of course do some other tricks like encryption and VPN but in the end there is always SOME trace of what you do.

It's not just Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Apple - if you turn on a cookie logger you'll see 90% of the sites you visit will leave a bit of your footprint.

Way of the world. I just live with it for the convenience the internet affords me.

  • Definitely shouldn't be a deal post - thanks for the info though, ryangoal :)

  • -4

Seriously, how is this a deal for a product yet to be released? Pointless post OP…

  • -1

So what do you think the release date would be? 2016 or 2017?

    • Later this year.

    • Speculated this year between June - October (based historically)

  • It might be a mistake for Microsoft to name the next version "Windows 10":

    • Windows XP: popular
    • Windows Vista: disaster
    • Windows 7: popular
    • Windows 8: disaster
    • Windows 9: could have been popular?
    • Windows 10: could be a disaster?
    • You skipped one before XP:

      Windows ME: disater
      Windows XP: popular
      Windows Vista: disaster
      Windows 7: popular
      Windows 8: disaster
      Windows 9: DOES NOT COUNT
Windows 10: could be a disaster? Should be Popular

Microsoft has a history of a pattern, I think they learn to incorporate new changes better to their second efforts. Windows 10 is a better blend of 7 and 8. eg. removing the tiles and bringing back the start button. I never liked using 8, but 10 feels like a more natural upgrade.

    • +1

You forget all the windows 1-3.11
      You forget Win 95
      You forget Win 98
      You forget winNT
      You forget Win 98 SE
      You forget win ME
      You forget win 2000
You forget XP was rubbish at first.
You forget Vista is fine after SP1
You forget win 8.1 is going ok.

That good/bad analogy is rubbish.Just sayin..

      • That and the name of the product has nothing to do with the pattern anyway. It's not like they skipped a release, just picked a name that's out of order.

  • +3

We've seen bargains before posted here that that don't go into effect until further into the future, and I absolutely do believe snapping up a new operating system for $0 is a bargain.

If $3.99 e-books are a bargain for $0 why not a whole operating system for $0?

I personally thank you for letting me know OP!

  • +1

As a web developer, I'd like to see Microsoft pay people still using ancient versions of IE to upgrade, so we can stop worrying about polyfills and fallbacks…

  • How about Windows RT devices? I foolishly bought a Surface 1 to run my programs I use for work but after trying to install them found that none of them will install. [Should have done some more detective work but followed what the salesman told me.]

    • +1

Although I'm a big advocate of Windows (yes, even 8.x) I absolutely believe Windows RT is the biggest pile of snot ever.

A BIG gamble on the modern interface if fine is you support it and other platforms, but only a few months after I got mine (luckily won at an event not paid for), they stopped supporting gmail/Google Apps synching contacts and calendars and made mail synching horrible. Constant crashes and so slow it was unusable, instantly turning the device into a paperweight.

And with no Win32 core there was no way for me to use third party applications to make it work either. Modern interface apps didn't exist to give me that functionality. Don't blame the developers though, I tried to code a few apps myself and coding is still a tiresome as ever. You'd think developing a whole new system, you would finally make programming easier.

I DID like my Windows RT as a secondary device for a little while though, before the extreme limitations became clear. Feel sorry for the people that actually bought one.

    • Journalists are betting a "yes" on that question. If M$ intends to bring Win10 to ARM (which is a type of processor commonly found on mobiles and tablets, like the Surface RT) then you may get an upgrade.

An apt username to defend Windows :)

  • Great

  • My free Windows 8 Media Centre key continues to serve me well. Wish I had of got a few spare to save having to ring up all the time.

  • anyone know how to get windows 7 for really cheap? I have a few computers running XP which I hadn't upgraded before.

    • +1

errr. You would be better off waiting for Windows 10 to come out, then look at the upgrade pricing before making a decision.

It would make more sense to upgrade from XP => Windows 10 right off the bat, and pay whatever price it is (I assume it will be less than what you will pay for a legit copy of Windows 7).

  • I really hope this applies to Technet Win7/8 keys.

  • +1

What's the best way to still purchase windows 7?

    • Curios about this as well..

Though, have you considered Windows 8.1? Can pick up retail for about $120.

Though it takes a little more time to get a well behaved system with a decent user experience, it's worthwhile over Windows 7 in my opinion.

With Classic Shell or Start8, the interface is basically the same as Windows 7. The charms and swipe can also be disabled.

In my experience, Windows 8.1 feels faster than Windows 7 on the same hardware - Have tried it on laptops, virtual machines and a Old Core2Due e8300. Startup is faster.

As well as the under the hood improvements, there's the improved task manager and file copy.

  • Cool thanks!
