Websites for Finding Roommates etc

Hi all,

Not too sure if this would be for this section or not… but I figured it should go somewhere in the Home section.

Recently my investment property became available on the market, and tbh I wouldn't mind moving in myself, but the loan repayment is quite high and I wouldn't be able to afford paying for it myself. That's where I got the idea of finding a roommate, as the property is a 2bed 2bath 1car space apartment, I thought I would try and rent out the other bedroom (with the ensuite) if possible.

My question, dear OzB, is this…

Would it be weird for someone to actually room with their landlord?

Are there any websites which you can suggest that will assist me in finding a roommate?

I know this is probably one of the dumbest/weirdest idea most of you have heard, but just bear with me =).

Cheers,

ProjectZero

    • Cheers mate, just curious does that site offer estimate on prices? I have no idea how much a room goes for in the area…

Lol, did think of that… BUT a little worried about finding a drop kick female… Too many in the Blacktown area if you ask me…

I used it several years ago, it was good.

    • Will check it out, cheers!

I second easyroommate. Been renting for the last six years and easyroommate and gumtree got me the best housemates. Make sure to meet a few and take your time to decide. Good luck!

  • adultfriendfinder.com

    • Rather use Tinder… at least that doesn't seem as dodgey for some reason…

      -EDIT-

This is going down a dark road I didn't want it to lol…

      • Find a room mate for one night on tinder haha

        • Lol that aint no room-mate

  • I've sharehoused in various situations.

One had myself, another person, and the landlord of the apartment all living together. Worked fine, except the landlord was a bit weird and would be strangely vocal about being super tidy (thus making you as a housemate anxious about needing to be just as tidy, which I am anyway.. but nevertheless..). But he was often the messiest. Then again, he was a young alcoholic with too much time and money, and he loved to cook elaborate meals while drunk, so the kitchen always looked like a bomb had hit it.

I also had a friend who lived with his landlord. He hated it, felt kinda silently pressured into being super careful about everything (even though you would be normally anyway) purely because 'the boss' is always there. Like you worry that they'd be protective of their house, any little thing not perfect could upset them, etc. BUT this landloard was quite uptight too.. not exactly chilled and easy to communicate with.

I guess it's just a matter of finding the right person to share the place with you. Also might be worth reflecting on yourself and thinking about how it could be for someone random living in the place you own, with you. Ie. are you really fussy about things, or pretty easy going and easy to communicate with etc.

You could always give it a shot and just see how it pans out :P might work really well, or might make you wish you'd never thought of this idea at all.

Aren't there Facebook groups too? I recall seeing friends of mine have sharehousing group pages liked or whatever on their pages… maybe have a looksie for your relevant area on there? I could see that being kinda useful - post an ad, someone responds with interest, you can do some sleuthing (sounds better than 'stalking') on their FB and get a sense of what they're really like, etc which may help your decision?

    • Ahahaha, well I have to say I'm pretty laid back majority of the time as long as I don't get pestered whilst I'm in the middle of something.

In terms of a neat freak I aint, I'm definitely a messy person so I wouldn't mind it if the tenant was too, to a certain extent by that I mean they better not just do a dump in the kitchen sink…

Lol here is my downfall, I don't bother with FB or any social media… hell if this site didn't have great bargains I wouldn't be here =P

Any suggest as to where to post the ad? realestate.com.au and whatnot isn't exactly equipped for this.

I think I used that site when I moved to Canberra, but.. that was years ago and the site looks very different now lol. Whichever one I used was good though. Hopefully that link helps. (edit - no. wait. Only 2 sharehouse listings in Sydney. WTF? lol)

    • LOL and there is none for the Blacktown area

      • Scumtree then?

How much rent are you after? House/unit?

        • No idea, need to do some research om the areas near by but from what I can see im hoping at least 250. Which seems pushing it… Especially when its not near the city and the area isnt glenwood or kellyville…

          Still im the planning process

  • How about posting an ad on https://flatmates.com.au/ or gumtree?

    • Was checking those sites out, also found out that realestate.com.au had a shared accommodation section =)

Looking at the prices though, I really don't think this is a possibility for me.

Thanks for all the help so far guys =)

Don't tell the potential housemate that you are the owner. Say the property is owned by a friend of the family who has moved overseas for a few years. Takes the pressure off the housemate being overly worried/cautious etc. removes that awkward factor.

  • Would it be weird to room with landlord - No, seem that many times.

Websites - other than the above, I like checking out Gumtree. Also University websites if you want to target students.

  • Cheers for all the help guys =)

Will look into this option again at later date. Currently, not possible judging from the current prices.
