Dan Murphy's - Discount Code for $500+ Order?

Looking to place a $500+ order with Dan's in the near future, yet for spending that level of coin, am looking for a discount voucher of some type such as free delivery + 5% off etc.
Anyone have any they can advise me of ?
Should include the item is a Connections item, so standard free postage for minimum spend does not apply, which is just rude.

"Dan Murphy's Connections is an extended and high quality product range that will connect customers with suppliers, including boutique wineries, craft brewers and artisan distillers. Connections products are sourced directly from their distributors and delivered straight to our customers doors."

i completely understand why they would not give you free shipping for these orders.

Hate to break it to you, but a $500 order isn't very big in the eyes of Dan Murphys. Having worked there for years during uni, I can tell you I personally processed countless orders well over that figure routinely, and this was in a lower socio-economic area too.

So as much as $500 seems like a lot to us normal folk (and I agree, $500 is a lot!), it's not going to entitle you to red carpet treatment sadly. They will help you as much as they can in store if you're making a big order, so you could even give their customer service line a call if you're that keen to try for some kind of discount, but yeah… I'm not optimistic of your chances.

As Settero pointed out, the Connections choices do have quite a valid reason for not being included in any free shipping offers.

    • Yeah people regularly drop that on a single bottle of wine, so they aren't going to batter an eye lid.

I would love to see some of these battered eyelids.
I wonder if the eyelid will be bruised or covered in egg and flour?

        • I prefer crumbed, myself.

and this was in a lower socio-economic area too.

I wouldn't be surprised if these high-value spends on alcohol were more likely to occur in a lower socio-economic area.

      • Definitely not. I've worked in a bottle shop in such an area and the largest sale I'd make in a day would be $100-150. The most common items are cases of beer, cheap wine and single long necks.

        • Fair enough. I've worked retail in a low socio-economic area as well as in a mid-high area (same store) and those in the lower bracket seem to be more inclined to spend their disposable income whereas those in the higher bracket tend more towards saving it.

@johnno07: While thats true, people with higher incomes can easily afford the better value purchase (a case) over the lesser (a single longneck).

          @heatseeker424:

hmmm… you would be surprised. lower income areas consume significantly more alcohol , i forget the exact numbers but lower income areas have like 3-4 x as many bottle shops than higher income areas, and they arnt opening more bottle shops to sell single longnecks.

and lets not forget ,people in lower socio-economic area are farm more generous thus need to buy more to share with mates !.

@Settero: Heatseeker is correct when it comes to $ sales of bottle shops when comparing high to low socio-economic areas.

Settero, I see you're from Sydney.

I know for a fact that the Dan Murphy's stores with the highest $ sales are in fact in the 'better' suburbs… wine sales trump in such areas, so even though bottle number sales MAY not be as high as your lower income areas (and I say 'may', because I'm not sure on that statistic), each bottle of wine you sell will still bring in more money than 6 bottles of beer, etc. Extrapolate that and it's easy to see how the number of sales doesn't actually mean higher profits or bigger sales in those lower income areas.

To clarify, I worked in one of the lowest earning Dan stores in Sydney. Most sales were in fact from beer. We were busy! but again, every sale would be relatively small in comparison to other stores which may not be AS busy, but each sale would generally be of a higher $ value. Say, Rouse Hill for instance makes a lot of money from wines over beers, etc. Ditto Alexandria. But you get stores like Blacktown which rarely has a fine wine sale, you know? It'd just be a flood of people after work every day buying single long necks. $5 per transaction.

Where I worked, the big $ sales were from pub owners who would regularly come in and buy trolley loads of beers and spirits. $1k easily at a time. Though they were quite regular, they were pretty much the only big sales we had worth mentioning. The rest were… beer.. small sales etc.

So yeah. I think you've actually gotta work at a bottle shop for a while to realise the true patterns. It's not quite as you're presuming. It can be quite a sad/depressing job if you're working in a struggling area, actually.

        • @waterlogged turnip:
Thanks for the interesting info! Working in a low income area is generally depressing. I'm pretty glad to be working in a nicer spot now. Though I've got to say, the "entitled to the world" class of customers you get in higher income areas are a pain the in ass.

buy the groopon vouchers for bigw. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/179237 they say bigw but can be used at any of the associated stores. you should be able to use them at dan murphys online as there is a space for gift card number and pin.

  • Ended up finding a coupon for free connections shipping.
Unable to find it now to share with you all though :(
Item is a spirit, not wine/beer and all for the same item.

Thanks for the feedback folks, appreciate it.
