Brand New Asus Strix GTX 970 for $49.99 ($89 Postage) on eBay. Pricing Error?

Just did a search for 'GTX 970' on eBay to see how much these were going for and this was the first result.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Asus-Strix-STRIX-GTX970-DC2OC-4GD…

Brand New, Buy It Now, store has 100% positive feedback (albeit a feedback score of only 73), 36 sold in 24 hours. Still have trouble believing it though. Maybe pricing error?

    It's a scam

All feedback is as a buyer and over 1 year old, it's a hacked account

    Do not waste your time

    • Thought as much. Moderators, feel free to delete this topic.

Nope, please don't. I saw this on ebay just now and thought i'd check on ozbargain to see if it was legit or not. This post saved me some hassle!

  • it's going for about $500 AUD mark.

    go for MSI imo

or GB if you have ample space in your case

    • I got my Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming Edition from MSY for $449 during their 18th Anniversary Sale last year. Sold the free game for $50. Couldn't be happier with my purchase!

      • awesome :), got any real life fps scores you'd like to share?

    • Look at the postage

      • Yes I did prior to commenting on here. Even with the postage price, it's a super cheap (to good to be true) price for a new gen pro series 1TB SSD.

        • Oh yeah true it was the 250gb one that was 200 wasnt it.

        • @holden93: Not sure, but after doing some research. This normally sells for around $750 in shops like MSY, uMart. The eBay seller is selling it for $190 including postage.

  • I have reported both listings to eBay as fraudulent listings, so hopefully some sort of action is taken!

ebay is too busy to care about scams, website vulnerabilities and hacked accounts, they're too busy counting money and revising the policies to screw over casual sellers.

They've yet to tighten up their website security and this is one of the reasons why old and unused accounts are being hacked. Make sure you change your passwords regularly. You'd think for an e-commerce website, security would be their top priority.

I've seen so many hacked accounts, and this is about the 4th thread that ozbargainers have created revealing a compromised account.

  • What i wonder is the "44 sold in 24 hours". So people are buying this?

Then they probably get an empty box or something delivered, complain to ebay or paypal…..then what happens?

Seller has already withdrawn the cash and made a run for it?

  • I purchased 1 last night just for fun.

will let you guys know how it goes.

    • Really? Nice, keep us posted! Im curious!

      • This is what i got from ebay and they have removed the listing:

        Hello xxxxxxxx,
Our records show that you recently contacted or received messages from through eBay's messaging system. An unauthorized third party may have compromised this member's account security by accessing the account.

We've taken action to restore this account to its original owner. Take extra caution with any communication you may have received from the compromised account. We are unaware of any problems with your own account. We sent this message only as a precaution. If you have received any messages from that seem suspicious, please feel free to forward them to us at [email protected] for review.

Here are the next steps to take:
        - Don't respond to offers to buy or sell an item. The offer may be fraudulent, and the transaction won't be covered by eBay protection programs.
        - Don't respond to any messages you received that appear to be a Second Chance Offer for an item you recently bid on. For more information on Second Chance Offers, go to:
        http://ocsnext.ebay.com.au/ocs/home
        - Never pay for eBay items using instant cash wire-transfer services such as Western Union or MoneyGram. It’s against eBay's Safe Payments Policy for a seller to request payment with these methods. For more information, go to:
        http://pages.ebay.com.au/help/pay/avoid-problems.html
        - Learn more about how to protect your account and how to avoid or report fraud. Go to:

If you already sent payment for an off-eBay transaction, or if you're a seller who already shipped an item to a fraudulent buyer:
        - Contact the payment service you used to make the purchase. If you paid by credit card, most card issuers provide consumer protections in cases of online fraud.
        - Contact the postal service or shipping company you used to send your item.
        - Please provide us with more information related to the transaction. The information you give will allow us to work more effectively with law enforcement, should an investigation occur. Go to:

Name for sure. Address could be a parcel locker. Number could be an old prepaid or something. And everyone has loads of email addresses.

If he knew it was a scam, maybe he didnt give them all his info….i hope.

        • @cheesecactus:

          Exactly, haha!

  • Hate to say it, but the GTX 970 has serious problems.

    In a nutshell, Nvidia sold people a 224-bit 3.5GB card with a 32-bit 500 MB cache as a 256-bit 4 GB card.

That means two things. Firstly, if you do something with the graphics card that requires over 3.5gb (despite the card being advertised to have 4gb), the cards performance plummets to minimal levels. Secondly, Nvidia may be guilty of some false advertising.

but the GTX 970 has serious problems.

Not really. I read the links you provided in full. In short, the performance craters once the VRAM usage exceeds 3.5GB, 'but thus far, we’ve [the reviewers] seen limited evidence of a real-world problem' (ExtremeTech). Basically, this is pretty much a storm in a teacup.

The 970 is still a cracking card, and it's still going to perform as well as it did before before the news broke. So yeah, Nvidia fudged up the specs for marketing purposes, but this is unlikely going to affect the 970's status quo as good value GPU in the $400~500 price range.

      • Yes, it's certainly possible that a user may not experience issues at all through never running applications requiring over 3.5gb of video memory.

On the other hand, they might experience issues, especially down the road given the gradual emergence of 4K. 4K gaming is probably the most likely to require large amounts of VRAM.

But today and now, I'd say the real issue is that NVIDIA has essentially sold a 3.5gb card marketed as a 4gb card.

        It's okay, we don't need 3.5K gaming anyway :^)

    • Doesn't bother me too much, but here's hoping they give us a little compensation for false advertising, as seems to be the trend recently. So far I've gotten
      - Assassin's Creed Unity with my graphics card
      - Far Cry 4 for getting the ACU season pass as an apology for launch issues (ran smoothly on my GTX 970 anyway)
      - Halo ODST and 1 month of Xbox Live Gold for Halo MCC multiplayer issues (don't even have Gold)
      - Bonus Rockstar game for GTA V delay
