Best iPhone Prepaid Plan for Parents - Low Use

My parents have asked me to find them a cheap second hand iPhone (going to be a 4S or 5), but I'm having trouble finding a decent low use prepaid plan for them. Currently they buy a 6 month (or 1 year, can't quite remember) prepaid plan through Aldi, which quite often they find they don't use.
However with an iPhone i am trying to find something for them that has a similar long expiry but with some included data. I don't envisage them using much data at all, but I think it's a necessity, isn't it? Any suggestions?

  • Ask them if they want "data"?
Sounds like they have no use for a "prepaid" package so why still follow that route?
Why iphone?.. wouldn't android be easier for them and cheaper?
Just got my mobile bill here… 3 months $1.60 .. Amaysim. No rip off flag fall charges, just a flat 12c min for the call, sweet!
When I want "data" at home, just use wifi. If travelling can use their 5c/mb data or tack on a one off 1GB for $10. Most hotels / motels have wifi now so most likely would never need it.
Us oldies use the mobile a little less than the younger ones so best to aim for something that suits their needs.

    • Whilst I agree with Android being easier and cheaper, not all older generation (at least not my parents) know what they are doing…

They generally see and app that they think is useful and download it… only to have it act as a trojan and spam them to oblivion and then they ask us to fix it. With iPhones at least you have peace of mind that this wouldn't occur as often, and you can send the iPhone to the "genius" bar if anything goes wrong.

I normally don't advocate iPhones as I have used both iphone and android and find android to be more to my taste, but iPhone would be easier to use for those that are familiar or don't care about learning what apps are not good for us or how to fix an app that's gone rogue…

Depends really… I don't know your parents, but do they generally go on the net randomly at home? If not, I don't think data would be needed, or at least not a large amount 100MB/month would be more then enough.

The thing you have to worry about is because it is a smart phone, it may use data regardless unless you configure it properly, or just turn off data completely.

Perhaps something like this might work? Not sure how it would work when they say

"You will receive 100MB monthly data allowance with any Simple recharge voucher. Included data expires 90 days from recharge."

I'd assume you would get 100MB for the 90days? There's also suppose to be roll over if you recharge before the 90 day is up… so they might end up with 300MB by the end of the year lol?

  • Both have been mentioned here already, but Amaysim PAYG, or Virgin Simple. Amaysim has lower call rates, but no free calls/text to same network that Virgin has, and no included data. (Amaysim you pay for data as you go.) Both of them are three months before credit expires.

I prefer Virgin since the number I call/text the most is on the same network.

Data is only a necessity if you use it..^^" If your parents don't, might want to switch it off for them. I switch mine off when I'm not using it, but then again, I'm on a low plan, so.

  • Thanks for the info everyone. Finding a low use plan with a long expiry and a little data seems to be a hard thing indeed.
