[HELP] VODAFONE Fraud Contract

My friend just asked for help on facebook. Here his story:
He received a bill from Vodafone charging more than $500. At first, he just thought the reason was that he made nummber of oversea calls over the amount he was allowed. He claimed that he still got 56 minutes for calling overseas. He went through the bill couple of times and out of nowhere a iphone 6 128gb silver came up.
He lost his oversea passport 1-2 months ago when his roommate moved out. The person of interest used the new number to call overseas and my friend confirmed that his roommate was using that number to call people overseas ( he used oversea numbers to ask them who was calling them at that time). He got a report from police for losing his passport. Here my question: How the guy could sign up the contract with Vodafone? (my friend got his personal information with Vodafone from his current contract). I am just thinking that Vodafone staff didn't check the passport correctly when the guy signed the contract in store or asked customer service what my friend pin number was in order to sign the contract. Can anyone give my friend some advice? Thanks

How the guy could sign up the contract with Vodafone?

I assumed he knew other details about your friend(dob, address, name etc.). With the passport, it must have been enough ID to sign up online.

Go instore to vodafone and explained what happened.

Now that the thief has realised that the identity theft has successfully got him a $1000 iPhone 6, I'm sure they will try it again and again.

Do a search on Google for "identity theft".

There is nothing to stop the thief from abusing the identity documents.

Get your friend to act fast. I'd suggest telephoning the Police immediately and ask for their assistance as your friend is a victim of identity theft.

Tell your friend not to wait. Their credit rating will be destroyed. Unfortunately identity theft is hard to counter. In extreme cases I've heard the only solution is an officially name change (cost ~$300).

This. Contact the police ASAP, you do not want any crimes made by the perp to be in your name either.

  • Do you guys know how to make statements to the police? My friend said that many people were telling this guy that he borrowed their documents, some said he did the same thing, etc. I know if many people's been involved the police will act quicker

  • A friend of mine had something similar happen to Optus, except he was unaware of all the fraud until he had bought a house and tried to get a loan for it…

  • I don't fully understand this. You are saying that he managed to get a new phone and a new mobile number and your mate did not notice that he was now being charged for two numbers?

    • he set up direct debit so he didn't notice it until the second bill that was way too high so His bank account was negative. Checked the bill :( Shocked

  • I use to work for Vodafone. Don't bother with VF customer care. Still call 1300 650 410 and ask them for the details for the fraud department. When I was in a VF store I had 2 cases I followed up with the fraud department. They were excellent. VF customer care may be able to transfer the call through or give you a direct telephone number

    • Now they make things so complicated. been asked to have all the documents send to them by email.VF customer care drove me mad these days. Have to wait so long and they kept transfer the call. I think the best way to communicate with Vodafone is through email and Aussies are way better, easier, friendlier to deal with :)
