Telstra Prepaid Encore Cap. Cheapest Way to Make a Call to US?

I need to make a single call to the US. I am on Telstra prepaid Encore plan so figured there would probably be a plus pack or something available for calling overseas, but can only find a mention of one for post paid plans.

I suspect I'm just not looking in the correct place. Is anyone able to help please?

EDIT It has occurred to me that I can probably use Skype, which I will try first, but have previously given up trying to use Skype for phone calls within Australia due to poor sound quality. If I do use Skype though, do I just use the same country codes as I would if using a phone?

I make skype calls from my desktop if that's any help. The options come up to choose the country eg US. Then, just use the keyboard to plug in the area code and number. If you want to experiment first, try a free call eg 18003232323 which happens to be Delta Airlines. Well, it's free for me.

With the Prepaid Cap Encore, any calls to any international country come out of your cap credit, not recharge credit. So let's say you recharge $40, you get $510 of cap credit, plus $40 recharge credit. International calls would come out of the $510.

USA is at $0.99 per minute plus $0.39 connection fee. This means you can get 510 minutes to call the US for $40

  • Or use an app called Vonage — it's surprisingly good quality, and free.
