Any decent tablets with a Price range of $100-$200

Hey I'm looking for a decent tablet with a price range of $100 to $200 dollars. It would be good if I could find it at Dick Smith, JBHIFI, Kmart, Big W, Target etc.

Thanks

  • How do you define decent? It really depends on your requirements, doesn't matter how great it is if it doesn't do what you need it to do.

    • I really just need it for some school work.

      • Do you have a preferred OS? Windows tablets are alright depending on your requirements.

They, the baytrail tablets, usually fall under your price range. If you are willing to look over to Chinese brand ones, you can get those at cheaper price. I think the baytrail tablets are going to be even cheaper than now because of the newer Atom CPU coming out soon.

        • I personally prefer Android but I wouldn't mind trying out a windows tablet.

@Salabala0: If you want something like Android tablet, then, I don't think you would like Windows tablet that much. The metro apps are half baked and almost non-existent (compared to iOS or Android) and you basically buy it because you can run computer programs like MS office and stuff.

        • As much as I like my current ASUS MemoPad FHD10 tablet, it's strictly for play and not entirely good for work.

I used to bring it my university and would use it to watch lectures, view comics/ebooks, download and view PDF and powerpoint slides, but not much else. Document editing was not it's strong suite and you couldn't really multi-task (no split window features).

Android office apps are still atrocious at handling MS documents and cannot render them accurately, so if you say your primary use for a tablet is getting work done then there's a major reason you should buy a Windows tablet.

If games + entertainment is more important then buy an Android device. I don't care much for mobile gaming though.

I find WPS office [ formerly Kingsoft Office, free for home use] quicker and easier to use than the Microsoft's own bloated offering on the desktop, and on an android system, I have not come across anything created in a Microsoft program it hasn't been able to display and work with. Microsoft own free offering for Android makes the demo mode of Polaris that many phones and tablets had look almost useful.

Try to ensure your tablet has OTG tho - you can then grab one of the logitech MK 200 wireless keyboard/mouse kits from Officeworks when they are on the <$20 sale they have every 2 months or so.

The HP's, while appearing to be a good name, are generally underpowered low memory poor screened devices aking to the cheaper Pendo pads. You should have no need to settle for a tablet with only 8 gig of RAM, and should be able to go to 8" with your budget. The screen real estate is well worth it if you plan to work rather than play.

The best in Officeworks at the moment is the Acer Iconia IMO. It has been cheaper, but has micro HDMI out, OTG and a bearable tho not very high def screen and reasonable build quality. If I was buying "today" that's the one I would grab. Bear in mind that as the back-to-school final purchases fade off, retailers will be assessing then clearing what didn't move and Officeworks for one will probably have a few "not suitable" returns landing on the sale tables pretty soon…

  • I bought a tablet at Aldi for my parents for $100. 8gb with the ability to add an SD memory card. I was pretty impressed with its ability I would recommend having a look at Aldi.

    • Funny, I wanted to get the Aldi one for my parents too. But by the time I got there, they were all gone. That was only just 2 hours after they started selling them! Anyway, I figured they must be good value if they're leaving through the shop door that fast.

The only issue is the OP may not be able to wait till Aldi sells them again.

        Aldi electronics sell out fast.
And then, sometimes, they return again when customers return it for a refund because it's crap :)

But yeah, Aldi stuff used to be quite good but in recent times their smartphones and tablets have been given dissapointing reviews.

  • When I first read this, I was a little concerned. First thought - seems so expensive for a tablet - edible tablet. Silly me.

  • Android is fine but if you want cross platform compatibility check out the Windows tabs.
Recommend buying from a b&m aust store with such things so you can have a warranty and some consumer guarantee.
Officeworks seem to be fairly consistent with good pricing.

The HP Stream 7 from Amazon doesn't look too bad and is in your price range. Runs full Windows 8.1 (not RT) and also comes with an Office 365 license which is worth more than you're paying for the tablet. It ships to Australia for just under $115
