AMD CPU and Motherboard Help

HI.

I have an AMD Phenom 9500 2.2Ghz Quad core and i'm planing on upgrading the motherboard.

can anyone help me choose an Asus or MSI motherboard that has

at least 4xUSB 3.0 ports(REAR) and uses DDR3 memory.

UATX/Micro ATX form factor.

Current Motherboard Description is below

  • 24.4 cm (9.6 inches) x 24.4 cm (9.6 inches)

Memory sockets: 4 x DDR2
Front side bus speeds: 2000MT/s (2.0 GT/s)
Processor socket: AM2+

  • The memory controller is built into the processor with AMD processors, not in the mobo. Your processor doesn't support DDR3 memory.

    • OK.Thanks.

      Out it goes.

Is t he Intel Core i5 4460 better then the AMD Phenom by much?

planing on getting that alongside a new Motherboard(ASUS Gryphon Z97 Motherboard)

      and some new ram(G.Skill Sniper F3-1866C10D-16GSR (2x8GB) 16GB DDR3).

With Intel chips the memory controller isn't built into the CPU like AMD?
So when DDR4 becomes more common i'll be able to chuck in the i5 chip into a DDR4 Mabo.

Here are some synthethic comparisons. Data is from Geekbench, a CPU testing program. You can download it from http://www.primatelabs.com/geekbench/ and try it out yourself. And then compare it to other people's benchmarks on the website. Results viewable on http://browser.primatelabs.com/

Your Phenom model has a score of 1000 (single core) and 4000 (multi core) on Geekbench

A Core i3 4350 processor scores 3000 (single core) and 6500 (multicore) on Geekbench.

Core i5 4460 scores around 3000 (single core) and 10,000 (multicore) on Geekbench.

Also, the current Haswell CPU chipsets don't support DDR4. I know you can buy them now but they cannot be used by the current Haswell-gen CPU, only Haswell-E and the upcoming Skylake processors are compatible.

With current intel chips, the memory controller is built on the CPU. Prior to that, before Nehalem was launched, older CPU's like the Core 2 Duo series had the memory controller on the motherboard (North Bridge). As such it was possible to use either DDR2 or DDR3 memory with an LGA775 CPU, so long as the motherbord has support for it (I have a P5QC ASUS mobo that had both types of slots). Its no longer the case with CPU's after the Core 2 era.
