Importing beer cartons @ $10 each, what's the catch?

Hey everyone.

My mates and I were looking to get some cheap cartons from a wholesaler somewhere. We can across alibaba and found deals like a carton of Dutch-brewed Heinnikin for $10 each.

Are there hidden costs to this? If not, I can't understand why more people don't do it. Thanks in advance for the help

FOB from my understanding is actually ex-freight, duties and customs…

FOB means that the sender pays for loading of good and transportation to the departure port only for shipping.
The recipient is responsible for the actually marine/other shipping, insurance, unloading, customs, duties, etc.

So essentially they get it to the boat, and you pay for everything else from there.

  • Still have to pay tax and duty to Customs. Would have to figure out what those costs are.

    • Duty on beer is approx 50c per stubby, when I looked into it a couple of years ago. It is indexed to inflation so will be more now.

      • Would be something like:

        A$10 per case
        + A$14.127 duty per case (duty for >3% ABV is $47.09/L of alcohol. 6L beer x 5% ABV = 0.3L alcohol)
        + A$2.4127 GST
        = A$26.54 per case

        Also,
        + shipping/insurance
        + GST on the shipping/insurance

(There's no <$1000 GST concession for alcohol - you have to pay GST on the total of cost of goods + duty + shipping/insurance.)

  • It would be cheaper to brew your own.
Get your mates to all chip in for a starter kit, after that it can cost less than $20.00 for 24 long necks.

    • We are at college so we'd probably get kicked iut

Mate, I' ve been home brewing since I was 17. Get into it if you like beer.

Dunno if the OP 'likes beer' as much as they like the effects of beer ;) lol

        • @waterlogged turnip: I do not appreciate the taste of Hammer and Tongs but I appreciate the taste of good beer but cannot afford it

  • if it sounds too good to be true then you've either made a mistake or it's a scam. In this case you're understanding of FOB isn't correct (and it's probably a scam too)

Thanks everyone you've helped a lot. Think I'll stick to the $30 Hammer and Tong cartons from Liquorland.

  • Aldi sells 24 bottles of Saint Etienne for $30. Tastes much better than Hammer and Tongs. They also have cans for cheaper than that.

    • 30 cans of Saint Etienne?

      • No, the cheaper cans are Rivet - a relatively poor beer made in Vietnam.

        • Yeah the cans in Aldi are pretty bad. Saint Etienne is the only beer I buy from there.

        • @boggie: What common beer would you compare Saint Etienne to?

        • @bargainsftw: tastes like Stella more or less. It's that stronger lager range.

  • carton of Dutch-brewed Heinnikin for $10 each."

Yeah well, clearly it is not the real deal
Someone got the spelling wrong, it should be Heineken

    • really, really good pick up there mate. thanks for the contribution

  • Überbrau from first choice liquor is a really decent beer. $30 a slab.

  • oettinger 24x500ml are good value for money. they sell them at bws and dan murphys
