Hi all. This is more of a "watch out" (although i know most,if not ALL of you here would have seen this coming).
I was trying to organise an item from the site "Alibaba" for the most beautiful pram i have ever seen.It was at wholesale price (as Alibaba is primarily a wholesale shipment company, dealing in large scale orders, and it was stipulated in the company t&c's that a minimum order of 1 item WAS allowable,so i proceeded to test them out.

So, you naturally reported him to Alibaba right?

    • DavoX…you bet i did.I didn't think twice about that.I have had no reply as yet though.

I haven't heard anything bad about Alibaba before. Sounds like you might have run into a nut. I personally wouldn't antagonise someone like that as I have seen some weird behaviour on the internet before.

Thanks for giving us a heads up. I plan to use the term "intercourse yourself" in future :)

    • +2

Hard to take an insult seriously when they give it to us like that lol

    • HAHAHA Jay43.That was my term (not his,he used the REAL term to me,i just cleaned it up for here).Funny you say that…that's what he called me (a nut).

  • I've always thought Alibaba looked suss, have never ordered from them and never will. Just screams scam to me… they could well be legit, but just too many red flags are raised when I visit their site

OT: I'd report it, and even take it further to the police. Might seem extreme, but in those types of cases I don't think you can take it too far.

    • It's listed on the NYSE and has a $200bn market cap, so the website is legit. But like Feebay you need to be cautious with some sellers.

Agreed :) Not saying it is dodgey, just that the times I've visited, it 'felt' dodgey lol

My scammey senses were tingling :P

I might give them a second chance knowing that though, probably dimissed them too early out of paranoia

I don't think it's paranoia….i think it's your entire being TELLING YOU to RUN.Just watch out for sellers like i ran into (no verification,no feedback available,no contact details and sellers all over Asia….but no Paypal allowed and payment to be made to Nigeria….yep, nothing fishy there).

All my Alibaba dealings have been fine, similar to ebay really.
This seems like a very strange aberration.
Considering Alibaba is a $100 billion company now, you should definitely report the issue to them.

  • lol western union to Nigeria, no definitely not a scam you should send him as much money as possible :)

I'm going to Nigeria next week. Send it to me and I'll hand deliver it. Just send it to : altomic, c/o Brisbane Gpo. Brisbane. Cheers

    • I was actually thinking of saving myself the bother and just giving out my CC details (you know, saves me having to type in all those pesky numbers each time).HAHAHA.

    Somewhat related news:

Hangzhou, China – The Chinese regulatory agency State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC) has reportedly criticized Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. for not making enough effort to prevent the sale of counterfeit items on its e-commerce platform. According to the Wall Street Journal, the SAIC issued a report starting Alibaba offers insufficient product information and does not use an effective system to rank sellers.

“Alibaba Group hasn’t been paying enough attention to the mismanagement of the Alibaba Internet transaction platforms for a long time, and hasn’t implemented effective controls to solve the problems,” the SAIC stated in the report.

Chinese government officials dissing Ali Baba. Hah. Like a pot calling the kettle black…

I lol'ed at this, as if their own netizens don't already know that China is chock full of shonky traders ready to ripoff anyone regardless of their nationality or race.

  • From research I've done, here are a LOT more scammers on Alibaba than on eBay. And from what I understand, much less buyer protection, so far I've decided to avoid as just can't be bothered dealing with the higher risk of transactions. Id be interested as to other people's experiences though since the prices on things seem a lot cheaper than eBay.

    • GourmetFoodie,i would love to hear some feedback from anyone here as well about transactions that have in fact gone well.I know that a couple of dodgy sellers do not make up the entire site (much like Ebay),but as you mentioned, unless the sellers take up Alibaba's protection policy (which is not compulsory),allow Paypal or have reasonable verification (again, seems to be voluntary),you have no recourse if something goes awry.At least with Ebay,Paypal is compulsory.
