      Ozbargainers don't buy new cars!
I buy cars around $10k and sell them at $5k.

don't get brand new! near new is good!
get like a honda Jazz or a suzuki swift low fuel cost and really affordable

I'm working two jobs and I drive a 7k second hand car.

  • +4

Don't do that;) New $20k car means a lot of depreciation and associated costs such as rego, insurance, interest. For sure you have better things to spend money on being a student.

There are lots of quality under $10k used car options on the market.

look at the carsales.com.au and you'll forget the idea of buying a NEW car!

Why is it so hard to get a second job they say?
    Harden up folks
Go get a cup of cement and drink it.
I remember when I was working and deceided to build a house with a pregnant wife,I started job 1 at 5am till 3pm.
    Job 2 3pm till 7pm.
Job 3 packed shelves at kmart 8-midnight
    So harden up princesses….
    Now I am doing a bit better…..
So u want a new car,go work for it champ!

5 hours sleep a night is just stupid. Your pregnant wife should have got a job instead.

    • +5

Instead of hardening up, why not smarten up. A new car at Uni is just not smart, not to mention working 17 hours a day is not smart, particularly if you actually want to pass uni. I had a $3k car during uni, point A to B, landed a sweet job that probably pays more than your 17 hours and now I have a new car and a house.

I recommend new cars since it gives peace of mind to the owner, no need for pink slip for the first three years etc.

But don't get one for 20k… just aim for ~10k e.g. Hyundai i20

      Pink slip?

      • inspection report

        • Is that another NSW only thing? I found out that CTP was included in the rego for QLD, and the rego is supposedly really cheap too…

        • @ProjectZero: possibly, since we are both in NSW and know what it means, while thorton82 seems like he doesn't know about its existence, and resides in VIC (according to his ozb profile)

        • @ProjectZero: yes a NSW thing and it is not required for the first 5 year, it is a yearly inspection to check brakes suspension and safety equipment.

        • @rigby75:

Ops, thought it was the first 3 years. and yeah the pink slip is actually quite cheap from memory.

I'm guessing you are not studying Finance.

Purchasing a car is definitely not the best investment. Its a rapidly depreciating asset and is not worth buying brand new ever. Buy used under new car warranty from a reputable brand and you should be set for many years to come.

In your price range with resale in mind I would consider:
      Mazda 3
      Mazda 2
      Toyota Corolla
      VW Golf
      VW Polo

People on OzBargain do not buy new cars….why? Because it's plain stupid! The second your drive it out of the showroom, you lose 20% or more. The best thing you can do is buy a near-new car second hand. Hyundai do 5 year warranties with their new cars so if you buy one that is 12-24 months old, it will still be under warranty. That's what we did. We got an amazing deal via carsales.com.au - buying a 12 month old car saved us about 15k! Educate yourself about what you want then price compare like crazy. Get a sense for what a good price is. If you are intent on buying new, then go to dealerships in lower socio-economic areas as they tend to be better to bargain with.

I agree with you but… it depends on the car, a Ford Falcon or Holden Commodore will often drop 10 grand in the first year to year and half.
I know, i bought one once that was 23,000 drive away 15 months old (34,000 drive away brand new) . So yeah that it stupid, i agree.

12-24 months, yes but it depend once again on the car. The two cars i have bought where brand new. Why? simple, I bought them near the end of the year when they had an overstock and needed to clear the stock for next years plates. The difference was these where a Hyundai i30 and a Suzuki Swift (under $20,000) and the price difference was less than $1000 between that and and the previous years model that had 40 thousand kms.

I spent months looking at carsales looking for a great deal on these two cars and decided that i would need to service and put new tyres on the cars that had 40,000 kms (most of them did) which would further drop the price difference between the used and the brand new car.

I agree with you about the 20% -30%, but when i bought my brand new cars the same model that had been sold the previous year was about 2 grand more expensive at orginal purchase, this mean that the car i bought was $2000 less as they where over stocked and nearing end of year.

So really the used car was $3000 less in depreciation, but needed $220 in servicing and at least $300 in tyres. My brand was discounted by $2000 and i could pick the colour, options etc.

Why would you buy second hand for under a grand? What is bang for buck?

Looking to buy a 20k car

Yeah, there's your problem. Also have you checked the cost of insurance on a 20K car?

  • You sound like you just want a new car to feel cool in skool.
How much have you saved up in the past years? If its not a lot, then thats like saying "Im finding it impossible to save up for a Ferrari and a 10 bedroom mansion next to a Johnny Depps house" for an average joe.

  • don't buy a new car for a start? you can get a nice, 10 year old car that will be reliable and between 5-10k depending on what it is and KM travelled.

    • Hell you can get a nice >5 year old car that will be reliable and ~$10k.

  • -1

go the new car, get finance if you need to, a new car will give you peace of mind and hopefully trouble free motoring Hyundai and KIA are both good cars with long warranties.

    • do not take finance..you will regret it ,we bought a 3 yr old FG Falcon from Pickles 49,000kms for 10K for my 18yr old

You are a student. Dont waste your money on a car. Use a bike or public transport. You will be so much better off financially!!!

Just think for second, before you drive the car it is going to cost you $40 a week (rego and insurance) not to mention the depreciation.
Then there is maintenance, fuel, tyres etc on top of that. Why when you are studying do you want the added pressure of having to work just to support temporary transport …

Buy a bike and use public transport. A heap cheaper in the long run. You can study on the train and the bike will make you feel better.

    Just my 2c

    • Amen to all the time lost while driving…
Especially if you drive in peak hour!

      • Amen to all the time for procastination and sleep lost while driving…

lol that sounds more appropriate for a student =)

  • If you have the balls for it get a motor bike, cheapest thing to get you from point a to b and they aren't hard to learn on either.

    • good idea, I ended up getting the zx6r Kawasaki ninja… it was a sweet ride.
