  • If the manufacturer didn't provide any upgrades you are out of luck. There might be community built ROMs, you'd have to search for them, but you'd have to know what you are doing, as the process could be fairly technical, and there is a degree of risk.

  • I agree with greenpossum.
The process of upgrading software is difficult as well as frustrating especially finding the proper support and drivers. The description on forums to upgrade is normally not clear and lot of acronyms used. I spent 2 weeks on upgrading one of Chinese Mediatek device and soft bricked few times. I was able to upgrade but after one week, the display sense stopped working near keyboard. So I can slide and use it but cannot type it. I am still unable to figure out the problem.
Even upgrading my Acer a500 from 4.1 to 4.4 with custom Omni ROM was not very good experience. The tablet is slow after few weeks and it is time to reset it again. I would suggest to stay at Android 4.2.2.

  • Don't listen to these guys above Flashing firmware is Very easy. And these plenty of guides online.

But don't do it lollipop is terrible atm I switched back to 4.4.4 on my nexus 7 as it cut my battery life in half .

It may be easy for you but I spent hours trying to upgrade a device and it still isn't done. It all depends on the device. It isn't just the flashing, you have to root it first, and for my device I had to try several methods before one worked. After that I found I needed a different downloader. So I've shelved it.

      • I've never had any problems and yes I know you have to root all my devices are rooted.
Also some devices such as my HTC one m8 you have to unlock the boot loader also.

        • Well rooting is one task you've done already and the OP hasn't. So effort you haven't counted.

        • @greenpossum: takes 5 min to root your device and like 30 to flash a new Rom

Finding right rom and deciphering the instructions is not an easy task for a newbie.
If you downloaded the wrong files and do a bad flash, you end up bricking the device and this leads you further down the rabbit hole of trying to unbrick it again.

Look at XDA forums for e.g, it's a clusterfark of badly written, jargon-heavy and pooly phrased guides and tutorials which can be difficult to make sense of for the average user.

        • @holden93: As I wrote above it wasn't a straightforward experience for me. Either you were lucky or I was unlucky take your pick. It was a Chinese tablet BTW so probably mite hassles than other devices.

  • Thanks for ur input guys. Appreciate it. Will do some research before committing any action

    • Btw android 5.0 is called lollipop

      • i know thats what i wrote in the title…

upgrade my Tablet to the new Android 5.0 (or kitkat)
