NBN Coming Soon, Can I Break My Telstra Contract ?

I am in a "Smart Community" which meant I could only get broadband (fibre) from Telstra

I have been told the NBN will be installed by April. When it is installed does this mean I can break my contract with Telstra without paying a fee and switch to another provider now I have a choice

This page lists three times that you can do it, but you have to check with your RSP first to see if you'll be charged an early termination charge. I'd expect that you would be able to transition to the NBN with Telstra without paying an ETC, but changing to another provider would if you're currently under contract.

  • Nice. How far are you into the contract?

Also which city do you live in if I may ask?

  • get NBN is not mean smarter community. Moved new house and our building only service NBN with no copper wires. Drive me headache forcing us to get a new plan now which needs to pay more.

We are so happy with our existing service only $60 a month include everything in our deal bundle unlimited phone calls data. Now waiting for setup and time and energy tried to get a deal close to what we have is very difficult with NBN. Feels like force us out of our ADSL phone plan before

    • Actually, there are plans for NBN around $60… T1 NBN with 250Gb is $65 minimum. It isn't unlimited but I think you are comparing Dodo (only place with $60 unlimited adsl plan right?) which is supposed to be really slow, as to a guaranteed decent speed from NBN

The OP is talking about the Telstra Smart Community https://www.telstra.com.au/smart-community

How you got that communities become smarter as a result of NBN is beyond me. Then again you have a hard time putting together a legible sentence.

The $60 bundle you speak of is hard to find on ADSL, not just NBN.

  • I would suggest to wait as long as possible. NBN management is really bad and it took me 4 months to get connected through iiNet. NBN sub-contractors keep on finding excuses to make more money of their time spend on jobs e.g. earthing for the NBN casing/iron box is not up to Australian standards(it was 4 years ago for FTTP and ISO standards did not change since 2007), the battery cannot stay in the specified box because the NBN box dissipate too much heat (it was ok 4 years ago for Transact/iiNet FTTP box)etc. After complaining to TIO, only then iiNet pushed NBN to install the box.
I have to pay $10 extra for same service that I had with Transact/iiNet and the actual speed is less that FTTP. In past for 12/1 mbps speed connection, I used to get 10/0.8 mbps speed on wireless, now I can get maximum of 6/0.8 mbps.
After all the testing and harassment for 1 month, I upgraded to next level to get 12/4 mbps on 25/5 mbps plan. TIO could not do anything because iiNET was trying their best. TIO suggested to resolve the matter with iiNet. My experience is that NBN is not able to manage congestion as well as Telstra copper wires were.

  • Yeah, they'll also cut your copper wire so you can never go back.

  • You will most likely have to pay a break fee. But will the NBN be cheap/faster for you?
