New Mobile Phone Contract, ~ $84/Mth Budget. Any other options to consider?

Hi OzB,

My company has decided not to renew their corporate mobile plan and employees that need a mobile will have to manage their own. The company is willing to reimburse up to $84/mth and for fixed price roaming (eg: $5 or $10/day while o/seas). Any expenses above this are borne by the employee.

Requirements:
Phone - iPhone 6+
Data - ~2Gb
Call/Text - Unlimited
Roaming - Fixed price options
Postpaid only (company req.)

Research so far:

  • Strangely, we have a dead zone in our office with Optus so they're not an option.
  • Investigated Telstra as I have home phone and Internet with them. $130/mth is their price and they weren't willing to negotiate at all.
  • Latest research leads me to Vodafone's $85 plan - http://shop.vodafone.com.au/mobile-details/iphone-6-plus-16g… Apparently their coverage has improved a lot in the past year or two?

Are there any other options available that I should consider?

Thanks in advance!

  • if you trust their network upgrades voda is probably a good option because they offer $5 per day roaming to certain other countries, which looks like your work would be happy to cover ($10 in a day doesn't get you very far on roaming otherwise!)

  • Yeah mate, with what your criterias are.

Voda seems to be the only way to go, the price has gone up though…

I remember seeing the iPhone 6+ 64Gb with 4Gb data for $84/month… now its $96/month.

Personally, I find Voda to be better then Optus for where I work and live. Moved from virgin (optus network) to voda and I actuallyh ave reception.

  • Telstra Boost Pre Paid is $40.00 a month
    UNLTD® TALK & TEXT & MMS
Within Australia to standard national numbers
PLUS UP TO 2.5GB OF DATA
    http://www.boost.com.au/rates.aspx
Just buy a years worth of recharges then it becomes a 1 year post paid plan.

    • Doesn't meet the requirements for the handset (no idea if the employer will give him the balance to put toward a handset, I wouldn't think it would be).
Also, global roaming is at Telstra's standard, eye-watering rates.

  • +2

Strangely I get better reception at home with Vodafone vs Telstra.

I think it would be a good idea to get a vodafone prepaid sim card for $10 or whatever and see how the reception is at work and home and if they're sufficient then sign up for that contract!

  • Thanks for the replies everyone, good to know there's nothing obvious that I've missed!

Looks like Voda is in the lead. Got a couple of workmates who just went to Voda and my corporate contract doesn't expire until March so I guess I'll have a month to see how the network holds up.

  • I've done the figures.

If you don't mind paying $40 per month for access then buying a 6+ 128gb on 96 plan is good and sell phone at end to make up difference
Just total the 24 months x access fee minus apple handset cost and you get around $40 per month access fee

  • Currently with Virgin Mobile, got a 128GB iPhone 6+, with contract that includes heaps of data (3.3GB, I think), and calls. (Not sure of exact specs) with insurance. Total comes to about $88 a month. Of course you could opt for a smaller sized phone, and hit up the unlimited side of their plans.

However, I signed up around the phones launch, so you'd have to check with them for current pricing.
