Vinomofo Black Market Mclaren Vale Shiraz $48 Bottle (Was $160) x 6 Bottles $288 total

61

Seems a little out of character to post deals for a wine with RRP of $160 a bottle.
Vinomofo has this secret Black Market wine for $288/6-pack (works out at $48 a bottle.

That's a pretty startling reduction, and would be a fantastic gift for the wine snob ;-)

Anyway, I am certain this wine is actually the Haselgrove The Cruth McLaren Vale Shiraz 2011.

I haven't tried it, but it looks pretty nice - should any OzBargain millionnaires wish to pass on a bottle I will be duly grateful.

The number of bottles that they sold of this at $160 is probably minuscule. Given the poor vintage (2011), I'd definitely need to try it before buying 6 bottles, even at $48 a bottle.

    • Yeah many had being affected. if it's Haselgrove, might be bargain. no gurantee?

James Haliday reviewed some of the Haselgrove one that able to pick the grapes before being affected. Hence still get a whooping 95points

Haselgrove The Cruth McLaren Vale Shiraz 2011

      95 Points

      Drink By: 2035

Bottle no. 0509 of 2389. Uncompromisingly full-bodied savoury/earthy/tarry black fruits backed by persistent tannins on the long palate. None of the four wines in the Legend Series have suffered from the vintage, this wine least of all. I just wish the tannins were a little softer, but it is a bold move to debut a group such as this from 2011.

You need to buy 6 to get it at title price. Also no guarantee that you'll get the wine as it's a secret.
How do these keep being allowed as 'deals'?

    • 100% guranteed return policy? how you use it?

      • if you don't like the wine, phone or email them, and they will send a courier to pick it up free of charge, and they give you a full refund. i've done it before.

        • All good points however if I got the correct wine in the first place I wouldn't need to use my time to phone or email them.

All this cloak and dagger stuff is just a crock. How could anyone have confidence that the wine is what the OP says it is. Nah……

    • They usually provide enough detail to easily google a match.

The thing is, the winery is trying to maintain an inflated RRP. Supply exceeds demand, so they need to unload the excess.
VM gives them $20/bottle, but the deal is they need to keep it quiet, or it will diminish the brand value.

Anyway, 48 bucks. If its no good just use it for cooking.
What's that? … "per bottle"? Oh.

It is a premium wine that usually sells for ridiculous money if it is the Haselgrove.
Because 2011 was a problematic year in Maclaren Vale they haven't sold out, so it is available at a discount.
The wine guide says it is quality.
I don't think an anonymous secret deal is an oz bargain "deal", but if it is possible to find out the identity of the wine it might prove good value.
In this case, there are not that many Maclaren Vale wines that sell for $160 RRP and have 14% alcohol, 95 points from. Haliday, 92 points from Parker, and cellar to 2035. All these things point very strongly to the secret wine being the Haselgrove.

  • I've said it before, and I'll say it again. There are some amazing long term cellaring potential wines out there around the $30 - $40 mark with high halliday scores, if that's your thing (both the St Hallett Blackwell shiraz and the Shaw and Smith shiraz from the exceptional 2012 vintage come to mind as having scored 97 points and a swag of trophies and, currently selling at $30 and $40 respectively).

Better still, you'll know what these wines are before you buyt them AND you can purchase 1 bottle or 10 (no 6 bottle minimum which is actually a huge amount to spend).

Just because a winery attaches a high RRP to a particular wine, doesn't necessarily mean it's great value when it's discounted. And a 95 point Halliday score is hardly 'whooping' :)
Obviously Haselgrove hasn't been able to shift them, hence Vinomofo is offloading them…

And finally, 2011 vintage? Stay away…

  • Black Market is almost always 70% off RRP (not shelf price). This is no different.
