Yep, awful camera, been some bargains popping up lately that are better quality.

I have anything from the Uniden 850 lying around, to the Target 1080p, a audiosonic 720p outdoor camera lying around and a Navig8r 720p lying around.

Going to put some to use and give some away very soon. Just saying that if you look around you can grab some really good ones cheap. The above? Waste of money… I bought one for $8

    1280960 / 640480 / 240*320

480p is it's native resolution. 960p is mostly likely just 480 with interpolation (it blows up the resolution to twice the size, however the video source is still 480p)

So you'll get what you pay for. Not a good deal by any means.

Can you link me an equivalent or better camera cheaper?

      • +2

25 bucks will get only get you SD resolution devices.

If you can spend more than that, and somewhere around the $50 dollar mark, you can probably get a G1W which is famous for being good value and having decent recording quality. It's probably harder now to get one at $50 because of our current exchange rate, I guess around $65 AUD after conversion.

But beware who you buy from because there are fakes out there — yes, fakes of famous and good quality chinese DVR's.

        • thanks for taking the time to offer something constructive.

This looks exactly the same as the Aldi one. I bought one from Aldi toombul for $30 (reduced from $50). Works alright during the daylight Night time video is poor.
According to a choice review none of the dvr's work well at night so I guess this is ok for the price. Have a look at a few aldi's they may have this at the reduced price.

    • That review is 18 months old!

our dash cam works well at night and most if not all conditions. The G1wh is about $40 usd but has a brain fart on dusk/dawn or on roads with lots of trees with shadows, it has a hard time switching contrast modes fast enough.

Our current cam is $89 usd with gps, base model is $69 USD. Its only a fraction behind when compared to one of the best night cams, panorama 2 but at $200 USD its a bit pricey

      • Thanks wholesaleturbos. Can you give me the make and model?

How about doing your own work?

      You are still young grasshopper…

You got ripped off much. Sometimes you must pay an increased price for something many times more quality.

Don't forget you must also get a high quality Sandisk or Samsung Micro SD Class 10 card as well. 32GB can cost $16-23 depending on the supplier.

Ultimately a good dashcam will be worth much more if it means you aren't forced to pay an excess for a crash. Don't skimp now unless your just toying around.

Search 'Dash camera' on Youtube and don't forget to increase the quality of the videos to 1080p. This will help you learn what is good, what is not and what might suit your situation. You can then search for the best price at different suppliers when you know what model will suit you best.

[MOD: Personal Attack Removed]. You have no helpful information, no facts to back up your claims, just some kind of superiority complex pretending to help people but actually snidely berating them.

How about I just don't take any notice of you and go on my merry way.

        There's deal worth posting.

We aren't here to do your work for you because you are too damn lazy. If you had a product in mind, we could help. But asking us to research, find out what's good, then find the best price for you? Get stuffed…

Can't believe you are so stupid that you can't comprehend that you will have to buy a decent memory card as well which would increase the cost by about $20 and so stupid that you cannot understand a clear instruction of searching for 'Dash camera' on youtube…

Anyone who wastes their time on you is an idiot as well.

@kronicmacstigator: 'We aren't here'.. Who elected you spokesperson of OzBargain? Let me be clear, I do not want any of your advice @kronicmacstigator. I found @scrimshaw and @kirath to be helpful… but not you. I can tell how great you think you are the way you speak as if there are more than one of you.

          @dealiorealio:

I am great, if you knew what I do in real life you'd probably die of boredom because your that much of an idiot…

I am not a spokesperson of OzBargain but I am a master of common sense! Do your own damn work!

  • I got that dash cam once. Rubbish… It was 480p so it was blury and pixelated.

  • A dash cam is just a recording of what occurs bonnet-forward, or whichever way you point it. I dont see that it has to be any jumped up resolution, just a reasonably clear record of events. So I bought a Chinese one via aliexpress and it works fine for me.
As for a more expensive class10 camera sd card being the "ants pants" for this purpose I would argue strongly it is just overkill and anyone who would recommend a class 10 would do it purely in mind that the dearest must be the best for all occasions.
I'm very happy with my "poverty" model Chinese camera with it's "cheap" class 4 SD card… but if you must have the dearest, it's your money… there'll be very little gained apart from upload and download speeds with a class 10 card. That may save you a little time if you have a lot of accidents.

I agreed with the sentiment here for some time, until I needed to pull footage for a number plate of a cab that didn't stop. My unit (an A118, which records in 1080p) was up to the task, but going through the footage leaves me with very serious reservations about whether 480p is enough resolution to identify plates in the same scenario sufficiently.

  • Can anyone confirm if this one's a genuine G1WC or not?
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/G1W-C-Car-1080P-Dash-Camera-DVR-N…

So many fakes on eBay. I know that AVI indicates a fake; this says MOV/H264. It also says capacitor, then in the table has "Battery, No capacitor "

Dunno what to make of it.

  • Why not ask the bloke who has it for sale.
He should know - or Google it for more detail.

    • Trawled their feedback instead. Seems legit.

    • Some Copy pasta from the Dashcam database

      QUOTE:

      “Fake” / Lower Spec Versions

There have been numerous reports of lower spec or “fake” G1W’s being sold. Typically these cameras are come with a cheaper Novatek NT96220FG processor and video quality is much worse. Some things to look out for.

If the camera records in AVI format, it is not genuine
If it is missing the HDMI port, it is not genuine
If you open the camera you can easily see what processor it is using

There are numerous threads in our forum on these “fake” cameras (here, here and here). eBay sellers totodeal, yinjishan, oohsomuch, abeyerr and okletsgoo have sold “fakes” and there appear to be many others that sell them as well.

Amazon also appears to be selling “fakes”. Sport Fort and Zeegoo have sold “fakes” and there appear to be more as well.

Be careful when purchasing from sites that do not indicate the camera has the Novatek NT96650 processor and the Aptina AR0330 CMOS sensor. If the processor and CMOS is not listed, check with the seller to make sure it comes with those components.

Some folks on Reddit reckon the Mobius is a better buy because it has better quality control. Not sure what the redditor is referring to though because there is also a mouse-shaped version of the Mobius

Maybe also checkout the usual Chinese stores (Deal Extreme, FocalPrice, GearBest Tinydeal et cetera and see what prices they offer. sometimes they are cheaper than ebay.)
