Etihad Upgrade Issues

Hi,

So I have been travelling with Etihad for years and have never experienced business class with them or anyone else. I have now accumulated just over 40K in miles so got excited about claiming my first upgrade for a trip in March.

Anyway, called them up as I couldn't upgrade online and was told my fare class was not eligible for an upgrade. One leg of my journey is eligible but it requires 50k miles which I do not have.

My outbound is SIN-ABU DHABI-DUB and my inbound is DUB-ABU DHABI-PER

Any ideas or is it just tough luck?

Thanks

I think it might just be tough luck - it's probably in their rules somewhere.

Maybe next time you travel, try booking into a more expensive/flexible fare class that can be upgraded? (I know that does go against basic OzBargain intuition though!)

  • Some discount economy fares are not eligible for upgrades and that's what your ticket may be.

On the flip side if you have been travelling with them for years I would expect you to have more than 40k points. Do you know if they have a points expiry system?

Also some airlines allow points+pay for upgrades, you can check if etihad offer that option.

  • Hi Gerbud,

Etihad does allow upgrades from multiple economy fares, but you will need to check your fare bucket first to see if you're eligible (if it's Y,B,H,G etc.) T and X fares are not upgradable, nor are any redemption tickets.

You can always buy the remaining miles from Etihad's website however. It isn't as cheap as some other programs, but I don't think 10,000 miles is too expensive.

  • It's the same on plenty of airlines - Qantas does not allow international upgrades on red-e-deal fares - you have to purchase a 'saver' or above.
