Best Budget Digital Camera for *Professional* Photos

Hi guys,

I need to take a few photos that can look half professional and my iphone 5 doesn't really cut it. Wondering if there's a cheap way out of this as I only need to use it a few times for a clothing shoot.

Thanks in advance!

  • Really casting a loose net saying "professional" if you asked a true professional they will tell you no less then $5k. The fact your Iphone 5 was even considered tells me you just need a ok quality compact camera for $2-300

  • professional. And yes, that price range would be awesome!

If you only need it for a short time, and that is your budget, maybe hire a truly professional camera instead?

      Something like
      http://www.rentacam.com.au/canon-camera-hire-sydney.html

Or advertise on gumtree with your budget, and look for a photography student who will take the photos + photoshop them if required

      Better chance of professional result

'Professional', so I guess something like an EOS 5D mark II for around $2000.
    Second hand even cheaper.

the software in your iphone 5 probably takes better pics than most cheaper digital cameras with the smaller sensors.

you might be better off looking for somewhere to hire some gear that is local.

or get a micro 4/3 run out deal maybe.

but it is really the software that makes the difference and for novices probably the best one is perfect photo studio in particular the effects section. i am a amateur myself with a basic dslr and the camera doesn't really make the shots it more in the post processing to make all the colours pretty, make the image sharper etc.

    • saying that i think something like a panasonic lx7 maybe i think might be in your price range. it's got a smaller sensor but an ok lens

If you only need something for a single job, then see if you can borrow a camera or photographer. The suggestion of a photography student is also a good option - maybe post a job or Airtasker or Freelancer or something similar.

If you want to buy something I'd look on ebay / gumtree for a used DSLR - an older model Nikon or Canon will still take decent enough photos for what you need and will be better quality than a brand new cheap compact.

Thanks for replies guys, didn't think of hiring one but seems the best option!!

  • Hire a photographer. It's only a little about the equipment and mostly about the technique.

  • canon 600D or nikon 5300 for pro pics. yes lesser models do take great photsa s do higher ones but this is my professional pic as a photographer as they make my backup bag for holidays and shoots

  • The Canon EOS M comes up fairly regularly on ozbargain and that has the highest quality sensor you'll get in a camera that price. ($200-400). The lenses it comes with are even half-decent, too. But failing that even a Canon 1100D or 1200D dSLR would almost certainly suit your needs and can be had for around the same price.

If you can find one cheap enough, the Canon GX 1 (whether Mark 1 or Mark 2) offers great ease-of-use combined with an excellent image sensor - but shutter lag can be a problem when shooting fast-moving objects.
