Just take it to Bunnings and they will swap it for full one even if out of date. Just over $20.

    • is there a place to swap a 9kg tare LPG Gas Cylinder for a brand new 9kg tare LPG Gas Cylinder? The one on the site you linked was 8.5kg

      • They only fill them to 8.5kg in the swap places, presumably some safety reg for transporting them, I would guess.
The cylinders are the normal 9kg capacity and can be filled to that at a manual refill place.
The one you swap is unlikely to be brand new, but if you look in the cage you can usually find one with a 9 or 10 year expiry.

        • Oh I see.
by 9-10 year expiry, im assuming it last for 9-10 years so it would be around 1years old?
also curious.. usually how old are most of the swap cylinders in the cage?

          @CBR250RR:
This is all as I understand it from observations as a consumer, someone with direct knowledge may contradict me:
Cylinders last almost forever. The 10yr inspection is in place because a fault can be so catastrophic, but the vast bulk of cylinders are good as new at 10 yrs.
The swap places take the empty cylinders, send them back to a central filling depot where a gas fitter inspects them.
Any nearing expiry (I think probably with less than 4 or so years left) get the once over and get re-certified for 10 further years if they are in good condition.
All the cylinders then go through a spray booth and are freshly painted so they look new.
They are then filled to 8.5kg and delivered by truck to your local bunnings, caltex etc.
So the assortment in the cage varies a little in expiry date, and if you don't use much gas it is worth looking for a cylinder with longer expiry.

What I do, is go to the tip and get a free expired cylinder, take it to a swap place and get a 9/10 year certified cylinder, then refill it at the cheap place for the next 8 years. Rinse and repeat.
This got me some 4.5kg cylinders for camping for nothing but the cost of gas, and a spare 9kg so when I run out mid BBQ I just connect the spare cylinder.

        • @mskeggs: Top advice

OP you just need to consider buying a new one with a 10 year expiry date at $30-35 = $3 a year vs the $6-8 more you pay for exchanging one from Bunnings, which you can refill until it expires.

The trick is to ask nicely when you pick up the Bunnings swap unit, for the staff to help you pick out an long dated refill. I have just said "I only use it once a year for a BBQ, so can they help me find one", and they have always been helpful, the worst was a 7 year expiry dated unit.

Also buying a unit may mean its only got 8 years depending on how long the stock was held in the store

BTW when the unit goes back, they will respray it if it's not one of their branded units or if its chipped etc. They also replace seals in the valves etc. Things that cost us $10 to buy they buy in bulk so cheaply it's safer and easier for them to replace rather than check.

This above is confirmed after following the blog post that wortho kindly provided below. If you look at this page you can understand more of what they do with their bottles.

        • @RockyRaccoon:

I think I will just buy it brand new.
Where is a good place to get it?

        • @CBR250RR: I think I may have confused you. Let me explain

New Unit $30 plus refill costs. Bunnings $22 (or there abouts) Independent retailers can be as low as $16. But you need to check your local area, Lets Say $18 for refill.

          Using existing Bottle,

First refill $22, Subsequent refills $18

Using new bottle $30 plus refill $18 = $48 Subsequent refills $18 Say 1 refill a year Simple maths over 10 years is.

          $180 in refills plus $30 bottle = $210 or average of $21 a year

Now if you get a Bunnings exchange bottle that's say 5 years life, then you will need another exchange bottle for the next 5 years.

          $44 for 2 bottle exchanges and 8 years of refills = $194 or $19.40 a year

Things to note. You can refill swap and go bottles rather than exchange them. You effectively own the swap and go bottle according to the Elgas site, so its the same as buying.

Do the math based on what you can buy refills for each year. The above shows using exchange

After all the maths above, which you can rework if you need, Bunnings sell the empty bottles for $28.90

Now if you always swap and go at $22 a bottle, there is no need to buy a new bottle, as it will be swapped out after the first fill. so nothing to gain by buying a new one.

        • @RockyRaccoon:

My mum just doesn't want to use old gas bottle. Do bunnings sell brand new gas bottles?if not where can i get them brand new?

        • @CBR250RR: Make sure you check dates. We bought our two bottles years ago. One was from a pallet still with plastic wrapped around the bottom but was months older than the first one I bought.

I'd be checking prices in your area first - how much to refill at different places. Because around here, it's about the same price (cheaper if refilling at the independant hardware store), to get a full bottle from Bunnings, than refill an empty one.

You can read all about it here http://www.elgas.com.au/blog/398-are-bbq-gas-bottles-9kg-or-…
However bottom line is $20ish dollars for 8.5KG's of gas is very cheap (in Europe they pay 3x for the same) this is mostly thanks to Bunnings in competition with Masters. In fact many people who have 45kg gas cylinders for home use are switching to 8.5kg bottles as it works out cheaper.

        • Excellent info, and more interesting stuff on other pages. Thanks for posting

      • All the bottles are 9kg, but they only fill them to 95% to leave a safety room for expansion etc. ie 95% of 9kg is 8.5kg…..

Basically a while ago they changed from saying 9kg to 8.5kg as they have never put 9kg of GAS in etc….

    • I don't believe they do take out of date ones anymore. At least that's what I was told recently by two people at Bunnings.

  • Coles express will swap out of date too, but they cost more

    • I'm looking for a bargain ..

      • I mention it because they were running a promo over Xmas where a refill was $25, and they gave an extra 10c a litre off fuel for $20+ spend.
I think that deal is over, but if it comes back it was a very good deal.

        • Oh I See

    • Coles Express is just conning people, as you said, the whole thing is automated.

If a cylinder is almost out of date, they accept it and Kleenheat refurbish it anyway, so a cylinder is a month out of date they have to refurbish it exactly the same way.

Also if its only got two years to go they refurbish it because it may stay in stock at a servo for that long or with a customer. (I never saw one less than 4 years to go when looking for a longer expiry date at Bunnings)

There is NO difference. If there was they would charge people extra for units with less than 2 years to go.

Your post on how they refurbish them is spot on.

I bet most times the extra $10 they charge goes into someones pocket if they can.

  • The last bit of info is some swap places charge an extra $10 to take an expired cylinder, that is why worthy recommended kleenheat based swap places, as they don't care.

  • I bought a new one some months ago at Supercheap on special for $30. It's a spare for when I run out mid BBQ.

  • I have the big one, 45kg i think. Does anyone know who's the cheapest to refill or swap?
