Big Home Bundle from Optus

Hi all, I came across the optus big home bundle currently advertising online.

http://www.optus.com.au/shop/broadband/phone/plans/big-home-…

I have been with iinet for over 10 years and would like to try something new. I would like your thoughts on whether optus is a good company to go with for ASDL 2+ (sadly my area doesn't support NBN. Cheers.

  • It depends on your current internet. There is only three options:

    1) iiNet has their own network in your area, in which case the Optus ADSL2+ speeds will most likely be different to your current one whether it would be for better or worst is dependent on the state of the copper.

    2) iiNet piggybacks off Telstra network, same thing as option 1

    3) iiNet piggybacks off Optus network, in which case, switching over to Optus will not affect your current speed much.

My question to you is this, are you on the iiNetwork ADSL2+ plans or are you on the Off-Net ADSL2+ plans? If you are on the latter, I am unsure if iiNet will tell you which service they are using to provide to your home, but you could also give them a call and ask.

I personally switched from Telstra onto Internode resell of the Telstra networks, so i guess you can say I have past experience.

  • i'd be on whirlpool (or walking down the street) finding out what speeds people actually have.

There isnt much changing plans if the speed is the same/similar

  • Customer service for iinet is much much better, I advise you to stay with iinet.

    • How bad is Optus? I've heard some horror stories about iinet.

      • Once you get to the right department, it's ok, but I have been transferred like 5 times between departments before, that was online chat, so it's not too bad. And most of my bad experience was from their cable internet, which isn't very well integrated into their website, so I guess if you use other services from them, it won't be so bad. But I will still not happy about it.

I used to have iinet until a few months ago, never had any issues with them.

  • The optus bundle looks attractive with the goodies but i'm interested in the line stability.

  • I am in a similar situation, but on a new build which has NBN. I am not sure how good is Optus's service in terms of gaming/torrenting/streaming compared to iiNet. Does Optus throttle the speed because of the 'unlimited' factor?

  • Optus ADSL is usually pretty bad from my own experience and my friends'.
Can't you get Optus cable at your place?

If you can get cable then switching to Optus is ok, as it's better than ADSL. If cable is not available then don't bother switching. (I know your area has no NBN, but cable is not NBN, yet)

  • The "Too good to be true" deals usually come with a catch. I hope it is not slower speed than iinet.

  • Just got announced that Netflix is coming to Fetch TV. Huge win for new Big Home Bundle customers! If only it were free rather than unmetered, we already get unlimited internet…
