PSU (500W+) for "potentially" working PC

Hi,

I'm in need of a PSU with two PCI-E (6 pin) plug's.

I'm not keep to spend much on this for a few reasons:

I'm not 100% sure this PC works (was given to me without a PSU)
It's a temporary/spare PC
No gaming/overclocking will be done

If anyone's got a spare- I'm happy with second hand.

Are SHAW PSU's a horrible idea?

Is there a cheap option anyone can recommend?

Yes, Shaw PSUs would not be a good idea.

A Corsair VS-550 would fit your needs: http://staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=vs550&spos=1

Alternatively you can grab something like an Antec Neo Eco 520W and get a PCI-E power cable - http://staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=pcie+cable&spos…

    • Cheers for the proposal.

Would there be anything wrong with a EVGA 80Plus 500W? It's got 2x PCI-E's, also 3 yrs warranty and is $15 cheaper than the vs550.

Nope. EVGA are a reputable brand, go for it!

  • Thanks. My only concern is- what happen's if my PC is already dead? I don't know anyone who could lend me a PSU to test it, and I doubt MSY would take a PSU back… Right?

    • correct

    • Whereabouts in Sydney are you? You can always just take the computer to a shop and say the PSU died and you've thrown it out (make something up) and ask if they could quickly test the rest of the computer for you.

      • The CBD… Hmm I wouldn't be that keen to take up their time, I'd feel a bit bad then not buying anything from them (unless they sold a cheap PSU).

Pay them $10 for their time? I'm sure they'll be happy to oblige as it will only take a few minutes to setup…. all you truly need is the two connections on your mobo to test your CPU, mobo, RAM and storage

You can also test your PSU with a PSU tester. Some shops sell it if you need it in a pinch, otherwise can source from feebay.

        • Yeah, Burwood computer repair store was happy to help me troubleshoot a dead PC, and they didn't accept payment if they couldn't fix the problem. (They couldn't, and they hooked it up to another PSU for me..it was fried.)

If you felt bad, you could buy something else you need? Like maybe a powerbank, hard drive, or MicroSD, or whatever.. Just takes their time and a bit of hooking up.
