Google Play Music - cancelled subscription but $$$ deducted.

This relates to a bargain from three months ago. The bargain was a three months trial to Google Play Music. Most (or at least some) of us, including me, cancelled our subscriptions immediately but this didn't cancel the trial. Three months free music. I now find that $11.99 has been deducted by Paypal. Wondering if this happened to anyone else and what they've done about it.

  • In the billing confirmation email you would have received there is a link for "refunds".

Follow the info there. Can't remember the exact steps but you go into your Google Play —> Purchases/Subscriptions —> Report a problem —> Request Refund… or something like that. It's a relatively pain-free process and Google emailed me within a couple of hours to confirm the refund.

  • Definitely contact Google. They're always very good and generous (in my experience) with trials and games (even past the 15 min trial).

  • Thanks guys.

Initially I contacted [email protected]. Emails have gone back and forth- very upbeat, very chatty ("thanks for reaching out to us!"). Their latest one to me gave me a list of things to try in Google Wallet. None of them worked. The final piece of advice was

"In that case, please contact your bank or credit card issuer directly. Your bank will help you protect your payment method, if necessary, and should help you recover your funds!". Seems like strange advice to give. They haven't disputed their error. They just can't seem to be bothered fixing it themselves.

I then followed Tafe's advice. I did the "request refund" thing and got an automated email back saying that I was requesting a refund of a free service so not possible. This even though the line that I was requesting a refund for had $11.99 in the price column.

Since then I've tried "report a problem"->"purchasing issues". No automated response on that one, so hopefully someone will read it. I'll report back if I get a response.

Maybe there really is no such thing as a free lunch.

    • I hope you get a decent resolution in any case. It's not that big of a waste of money even if you don't get a refund. I prefer Spotify but Google Music is still a good service!

      • Thanks. I agree that it's a pretty good service. For some reason though, I didn't use it all that much. And it occurs to me that I'm going through a fair amount of effort for $11.99. Principal of the thing. Plus I don't really want to be paying money to Google (or Apple) because they use tax havens to avoid paying tax in this country. Just my little bugbear.

        • Oh it's okay, I know. It's a little dodgy. Update us if you get a resolution eventually!

  • So confused by this thread. There is a request refund button/option in google play in your purchase/subscription section. I selected it and they refunded within a few hours…

    • As per my second post, I tried that and I got an automated response:

We see that you've requested a refund for Google Play Music All Access; however, it looks like this order ID corresponds with a free item, which can’t be refunded.

The order ID had $11.99 in the price column, so… ?

      Glad it worked for you.

      • Strange!

Sorry - I didn't read your thread properly.

  • I was contacted by a Google Play specialist within Google support. He sorted it out for me. I think that the problem was something to do with the fact that I've got a couple of linked email accounts. I still think there's something a bit wacko about Google's systems, but to give them credit they followed through. Bottom line is the money will be refunded.
