Cheaper Netflix Region? (Assuming Fee-Free Credit Card)

I was going to post this on Whirlpool… but I was fearful of the retaliation about being a tightass.

Here, I feel comfortable.

Given the large amount of Netflix Regions available via DNS switching, and the crappy US-AUD at the moment - is realistic to look at signing up a Netflix account in a country where the exchange rate is better?

I mean, as of 23/02/2015: (Basic Package)

Netflix US $8.99 USD -> $10.23 AUD
Netflix Canada $7.99 CAD -> $8.14 AUD
Netflix Brazil $17.90 BR -> $7.99 AUD

Thoughts?

Regardless I think Netflix US is great value… but I am an Oz-bargainer after all…

  • Probably a good idea if you're on the new plans..
    Those of us on the old $US7.99 plans get extra benefits (eg 2 simultaneous streams) apart from just cheaper rates.
    Still, I wish I'd bought a few 12 month gift cards back when they were available and the dollar was good.

    Actually I think Brazil is the cheapest:

    $14.99 BR -> $6.69 AUD

    • Gee that's good. Any trouble getting your CC accepted?

      • Don't know. Haven't tried yet.

        Keen to do it though - just worried about my Citibank Plus fee free card being locked out or something in the switch over.

        I'll wait and create a new AU netflix account with a local debit card, then cancel my US Netflix and then try and re-signup with the Citibank Plus in Brazil or cheaper. That way I shouldn't lose any access to Netflix :)

        • Hello, did you go ahead with this, how did you go? Thanks

    • [EDIT] 23/02

      This is the old Netflix Price. Current minimum price is:
      Netflix Brazil $17.90 BR -> $7.99 AUD

  • So in theory if we sign up locally to the Aus version we should still be ale to access the U.S. content right?

      With DNS switching, yes

  • What a great idea, never thought of that. How would you sign up to a different region? I know how to DNS switch with Getflix, is it the same thing?

    I've got an existing account, I wonder if I changed my profile in Netflix to a different address if it would use new pricing?

      1) Log into Getflix, change the Netflix Region (eg The Netherlands)

      2) a.Shut down Netflix (if it was already operating before Step 1)
      b. Start Netflix

      3) Enjoy "living" in The Netherlands for the night.

      Your Netflix login travels with you.
      We're wathing Better Call Saul on Netflix while we're "in the Netherlands".

      I found out about this awesome website last week. To help search where you might want to "travel" based on what ypou want to see.

      • Awesome, thanks for the site!

        I wonder how the new Netflix App on FetchTV will work with geo-relocation? (it's a nicer work then geo-unblocking)

      • Cheers mate, but do you know how I could go about changing regions on my actual Netflix account so I get billed in a different currency?

        • Email them and ask…
          I suspect the answer will be "start a new account".

        • According to the blog post I linked below you can contact them to change it. Would be interested to hear how you go if you try it, because that would mean no currency conversion fees on the credit card. Not sure what they would charge if they change it, I assume at the current exchange rate of their bank or something?

    This is great. I'm thinking of signing up via Columbia to standard package.

    Has anyone tried as per this post to change to being billed in AUD?

    Also - extreme cheapness here - has anyone tried code from the Optus deal via Columbia? Someone said it worked for US.

  • 2 years on does this still work?

    This spreadsheet was updated just months ago.
