Backpack that sits off your back

Hi,

Im after a new backpack that will fit a 15.6" laptop. I sweet a lot (walk or cycle most places) with conventional backpacks.

Ive seen some that are supported off your back to allow ventilation.

I cant seem to find any around.

What are these backpacks called?

Ang suggestions on where to buy?

Thanks

Try travel/outdoors stores like Kathmandu, Paddy Pallin, and Mountain Designs. All three have big Easter sales that are worth waiting for. If you can't wait, Kathmandu Summit Club members receive 40% off regular prices (that said, their "regular prices" are ridiculously high). It's free for students to join but there's a fee for others.

Black Wolf also make good backpacks.

I have a Kathmandu laptop backpack that I've been very happy with for cycling.

  • i have the older model (actually i specifically like the older ones so i bought it not the new model - slightly different)

other stores might have them so you better go and try.
yes back side support ventilation, flat hard, built is top notch, warranty for life, zipper amazing. light weight too!

  • Thanks- but I don't think I explained it well.

I can't find a picture to explain it- but I've seen them around a fair bit.

It's really hard as i can't find any through google. So I've made this pic to explain-

  • I don't think you'll find one that is a dedicated laptop backpack, most with back ventilation are made for hiking / daytrips or sports.
Usually the backpack section itself is curved away from your back, with a straight piece of mesh that goes against your back.
    I've found a couple:

  • As thehunter points out, back ventilation backpack is designed for hiking/daytrips, the curved back makes it space un-efficient for laptop. Anyhow, you can bring along you laptop to the shop to try it out, to see if it works for you.

The backpacks you are looking for

    Osprey Stratos 24

You can find Osprey backpacks in Paddy Pallin and online shop hiking.com.au.

    Deuter Race EXP Air

You can find Deuter backpacks in Anaconda and some bike shops, (not sure if Mountain Designs still selling Deuter).

    • I've got a Deuter Race Air. A bit small so bring your laptop in to try. There are 2 thicker pads running down the back of the backpack and against your back as you are carrying it, so there is no 100% "off back" design as far as I know. If I were you, I'd put my laptop into a waterproof sleeve before placing it inside the backpack.

  • Macpac Rapaki 30 might be worth a squiz.

I can't swear it fits your size laptop but it fits my 11' macbook air inside a thick neoprene cover.
It is designed in such a way as to keep the main rear panel off your back allowing great ventilation.
