Wanted: VHS tape player for senior

Hey guys, hope someone can help me. I'm looking to buy a VHS tape player (and/or recorder) recording not needed, for my mum. She has a boxful of tapes from long ago that she watches regularly. Her old one died and now I can't find one anywhere.

Big W used to sell an LG VHS DVD recorder but not anymore. In its heyday you used to be able to buy one from JB HIFI for $49, but Big W used to sell theirs for $350 !

In retrospect I should have recorded them to DVD, but too late now.

If someone knows where I could buy one I would be most grateful. Or you may have one you want to get rid of one I could take it off your hands. I will put up a wanted ad in classifieds as well. I'm in Melbourne.

No problem :) As others have said grab a conveter kit while you're at it and put all the videos on a hard drive….

    • This one went for $73 plus $15 postage. Too expensive for me. After all this is OzBargain. Duh. :)

If you're on/near the SE side of Melbourne - I've got a VHS player that I'd gladly sell you for $20. It's in good condition (NEC brand). I bought it a few years back to do some transfers of old tapes, and it's sat collecting dust in my cabinet every since. If interested let me know - and I'll try to hook it up and confirm that it's fully functional.

    • Bargain ogre can you pls test it out and pm me if its ok. I can come and pick it up. Are you near public transport? With PTV cutting out zones 2 & 3, now for $3.80 you can travel anywhere in melbourne. Cool.

Sorry just saw this reply. I'll try to get it tested in the next couple of evenings and let you know via private message here.

Recently sold mine via Gumtree. The guy who bought was in similiar situation, second hand was the only option.

I suggest that you back everything up as soon as you can upon picking up a new VCR.

I have a heap of old VHS fishing videos that I would love to watch again. I will try ebay & gumtree as well.

Op shop. I've seen the 6 head ones go for $8 at my local.

    • Nice. Thanks. Never thought of that.

Myer sell a VCR + DVD Recorder combo, but it's quite expensive ($350)

    • That would be the LG one that Big W used to sell also at $350. I would never pay that.

Tomorrow I'm definitely listing my VHS… They seem to be in high demand haha

Have you tried cash converters or any OP shops thay may have some old ones

Do you know anyone that works in a school? They may be able to borrow one over the holiday period.

That's correct. Cash Converters and other Pawn shops normally do have VHS players / recorders though second hand with 90 days warranty. They go for around $25.

  • Thanks guys finally found a relatively good one on ebay for $50 local seller so can at least go back to him if it stuffs up. As a pleasant surprise found i can video input in my graphics card so did not have to use my crappy aldi dongle i bought a few years ago. Pretty decent quality input.
