Pathetic Customer Service

I bought a gift bag from shop located next to Electric Escalator at Wynyard station. The gift bag had price sticker so I requested politely to the girl at counter to assist me with taking off the price sticker.

She bluntly told me she does not do these things and only people from your country ask for it. I was shocked to hear this statement as she could have politely refused to do it.

I just walked out of the store and I was pissed off!!!

Was it appropriate for this girl to make such remarks?

She bluntly told me she does not do these things and only people from your country ask for it.what was ask for it!

That was sightly inappropriate of you to 'ask for it' when you just met. Language issue.

    But….

    Did she get the sale?

However this raises the question, is she the owner? Her loss.

If not, what's the deal with her wages? ie does she get award rates? Is there a issue of sponsership?

What else do we people from our country do? How the mind wanders!

I had already paid when I asked for the help.

I guess she is just an employee but not sure.

If she was not willing to help, I was happy to hear rejection but the second comment was not required.

I had already paid when I asked for the help.

I would've asked for my money back and said I'll take my business elsewhere. That's just plain rude.

If she was not willing to help, I was happy to hear rejection but the second comment was not required.

        Agreed, no place for that.

Are you talking about the $2 store near the escalator?

        • +1

Yes, it is $2 store next to electric escalator. I guess it on your right if you are at flower shop.

@Sshanaz: Ha, I knew it. I've been there twice, they've been rude both times. No customer service skills but I guess you get what you pay for at a $2 store.

On a side note, the people in the flower shop are lovely.

She bluntly told me she does not do these things and only people from your country ask for it.

Surely it was miscommunication somewhere, maybe she thought you wanted a discount? In which case would make more sense, though still rude. Removing price tags/stickers from anything gift related is normal practice in gift giving, regardless of race or culture or country (In Aust at least). But then again, I usually take it off myself.

I agree, this sounds like a big misunderstanding.

The shop staff probably misheard/misunderstood 'can you please take the price sticker off?' as 'can you please take xx% off the price of the product?' and coincidentally some ethnic group frequently asks for discount at $2 stores.

      • But.. OP had already paid for the item when they asked for help to remove the sticker.

Why would the shop staff hurl racial abuse at its customers for such a simple request?

        • Exactly I had already paid so her comment came as a shock.

I will not never go to this shop again and ensure nobody in my office does.

        • @Sshanaz: Better still get 3 or 4 of your workmates to roll up and each ask for help removing the price sticker BEFORE purchasing a bag. The response will be gold.

  • Again with the racism …. not to say it is right but happens often here in Australia.

I would have asked for a refund immediately and told her to shove the bag up her bum.

    Unacceptable behaviour

lol @ what she said. What does it even mean?!

  • +2

Sounds a lot more like the worker thought you were asking for a discount (even after having paid for the item, I've seen people stand there and argue for a discount). No excuse for stupid generalisations though, write a letter to the manager (and tell them that you've named and shamed them online).

Something feels odd, why would you need help taking off a price sticker?

    • +1

Agreed. Couldn't you just peel it off upurself? Unless you don't have hands…then maybe she was discriminating because you are disabled?

  • Are you Anglo? I have heard we often ask for help in shops. No wonder she was abusive!

    • -4

Is that a racist term for Aboriginals?

  • she must be on $2 wages in $2 shop for such a rude response

  • Doesn't matter what the price of item Is or what the request is - bad customer service including inappropriate replies is bad customer service. Regardless of the shop, customers asking for price tags to be removed is a popular request.
