Desktop Notifications for Chrome, Firefox and Safari

We have just pushed out a new feature this morning related to OzBargain's notification system. Previously when a new notification comes in, a small box will pop up at the lower-right corner of your browser window. However it's not that useful when your OzBargain window/tab is in the background.

Now OzBargain can notify you via the Notifications API, supported currently by Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Opera on the desktop, as well as Firefox on mobile. To enable it,

  • Hover over the Notifications Bell icon next to "My Account"
  • Click on [Tick] Desktop button
  • Grant permission to the website to allow Notifications

Next time a notification comes in it would popup next to your OS's notification area. You won't miss people replying your comments even when OzBargain is running in the background!

How to Turn Notifications Off
Chrome
  1. While in OzBargain, click on the green padlock on the left of URL
  2. Under Permissions, change "Notifications" to "Use global default (ask)"

  • Sounds great.

  • Can someone please reply to this?

    • No :p

      • Hey it came up. That's AWESOME!

  • Been using it for the past day (or two?). Very handy as OzB is usually running in the background. Saves my from obsessively occasionally flicking back to the tab to check for new posts etc.

    +1!

  • Is there a way of switching back?

    • +2

You can revoke the permission you've given to the website.

      • For Chrome you click on the padlock and it should be under "Notifications"
      • For Firefox you click on the padlock and it should be under "Show Notifications"
      • Chrome notifications icon is a bell.

      • In Chrome, I have to right-click on the padlock and Notifications is near the bottom.

  • I like it! Using this feature since yesterday.

  • Sorry, but how does this work?

I have clicked or hovered over the "bell" but it only gives me two (2) options, See All or Mark as Read.

I have also clicked on the Padlock and changed notifications to allow them for this site.

Nothing seems to be happening as far as I can see.

Maybe it's a techie only thing that is beyond my IT capability :-)

  • The notification is now popping up in the bottom right hand corner near the clock etc.

    Is that correct?

I was on OZB site at the time, reading deals.

Is this supposed to work when I am browsing other sites? Does it work if you are not logged in to OZB?

    • It only works on OzBargain when you log in and when OzBargain is opened in at least one window/tab.

  • Can I use this to get notifications for new deals?

    • +1

Currently only for stores & users subscription, but we'll extend that to categories & events as well. Under your settings -> subscriptions menu, under "stores" or "users" you can set Notification to "Web" rather than "Email".
