The quality at Rivers is really crap, probably not worth much more than $5.

I don't find them any better quality than the sub $5 stuff at kmart, certainly not worth a special trip IMO

  • and for those sorts of prices, are they using ethical labour?

    • Nope…

With everything coming from all corners of the globe it's hard to determine what is ethical these days.

Best bet is to reduce consumption as a general matter.

Reduce consumption is the best form of saving…save 100%
Cannot beat that…unless you get stuff for free!

You're on the wrong website too then…

        • @jv:

Reduce consumption AND reduce spending with bargains.

Just yesterday I was tempted by the DSE cordless phone deal to replace my old, clapped out (ie: battery dead) model. Was about to order and thought "Hold on, what for?" I converted the impulse to buy a new phone to buy 2 replacement batteries off eBay instead to give the old one a new lease on life. Will I have a new trendy phone? No. Will i have an old one that does the job, save $45, save on landfill and feel the same as I would 2 days after getting the new phone? Yes.

        • @jv: They should be applauded not admonished. The more consumers who abstain from shopping, the better the deals on offer to lure back shoppers.

        • @Thrift: some people think they are saving just because they get a bargain. Truth is that they may get a huge bargain, but if they did not really need the item and they bought it only because it was "a huge bargain" they wasted their money

        • @maxi: I don't disagree with you, I was simply pointing out that during sales slumps businesses tend to incentivise shoppers.

I have more of a gripe with the waste generated by business' mass over-production - such as car companies that beg for government handouts while running their yearly "massive runout sales on last year's model that no-one bought".
